18、eaf ears at a new Toronto restaurant-but thats not a bad thing! In fact, thats the whole point at Signs Restaurant, Canadas first restaurant mostly staffed by deaf servers. Opening July 16 at Yonge and Wellesley, the new restaurant asks customers to order food and drink using sign languages with the
19、 help of a “cheat book” that illustrates(用图画说明) how to sign menu items. Its sure to be a special dining experience, but Signs is really more than that. Its owner Anjan Manikumar has provided a kind of community (社区)service for the deaf that often struggle (挣扎)to find jobs. When Manikumar was a mange
20、r at a Boston Pizza in Markham, he noticed one of his frequent guests was deaf. With no tools or education for staff to communicate with him, ordering food was a game of point, nod and serve. Manikumar wanted to change that. So he learned American Sign Language, known as ASL. Now Signs Restaurant no
21、t only makes it possible for the deaf to work and dine using their language, but also provides a place for the hearing to learn about the deaf community. It isnt the first “deaf restaurant”- San Francisco is home to Mozzeria, a pizza restaurant with deaf owners and staff- but it is the first in Cana
22、da to have a large deaf serving staff and the first to fully combine sign language with the dining experience. When guests arrive, they will be greeted by a hearing hostess who will act as a translator as guests are introduced to their deaf server. Once seated, the “cheat book” of ASL illustrations

The idea of Signs Restaurant is similar to the popular O.Noir restaurants, where guests dine in the dark to experience the world of their blind servers.
