This method describes coating and static immersion procedures for determining the retention of a bituminous film on an aggregate surface in
2、the presence of water. It is applicable to cutback, emulsified, and semi-solid asphalts and tars. 1.2. The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 2. REFERENCED DOCUMENTS 2.1. 3、on of Coarse Aggregate 2.2. ASTM Proceedings, Vol. 64,1964. 3. SUMMARY OF METHOD 3.1. The selected and prepared aggregate is coated with the bitumen at a specified temperature appropriate to the grade of bitumen used. In the case of cutback asphalt and tar, the bitumen- coated aggregate is subjected
4、 to a curing period of 60C (140F). In the case of emulsified asphalt, the aggregate is coated with bitumen and subjected to a curing period at 135C (275F). After coating, in the case of semi-solid asphalt and tar (Grades RT-10, RT-11, and RT-12), or after curing in the case of cutback asphalt, emuls
5、ified asphalt, and tar (Grades RT-1 through RT-9, RTCB-5, and RTCB-6), the coated aggregate is immersed in distilled water for 16 to 18 hours. At the end of the soaking period, and with the bitumen-aggregate mixture under water, the total area of the aggregate on which the bituminous film is retaine
6、d is estimated visually as above or below 95 percent (Note 1). Note l-The 95-percent level was selected because it has been determined, by cooperative test, that only at this and at the five-percent retained coating levels can a reasonable degree of reproducibility be obtained when rating the same s
7、ample by visual estimation. 4. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE 4.1. This method should not be used as a measure of field performance because such a correlation has not been established. TS-2d T 182-1 AASHTO 4.2. This procedure is suggested as a go-no-go test at the 95-percent level because its precision is not
8、 satisfactory for application at lower levels. No attempt shall be made to evaluate the retention of a film below 95 percent. This is a limitation of the method and does not intend to imply in any way that an aggregate-bitumen combination failing to retain a 95-percent coating by this laboratory pro
9、cedure will give unsatisfactory performance in the field (Note 2). Note 2-A stripping test employing a tracer salt method and a flame photometer technique, which provides for film evaluations below the 95-percent level, has been published for information only in the 1964 Proceedings of the American
10、Society for Testing and Materials, Vol. 64, 1964. A statistical report on the work done to substantiate the method is available from ASTM Headquarters. 5. APPARATUS 5.1. Containers-for mixing, having rounded corners, such as seamless tin cans, 500 mL (16 oz) capacity. 5.2. Scales-with a capacity of
11、200.0 g accurate to f 0.1 g. 5.3. Spatula-steel, with a stiff blade approximately 25 mm (1 in.) in width and 100 mm (4 in.) in length. 5.4. Constant Temperature Oven-capable of maintaining any temperature between 60 and 149C (140 and 300F) within f 1C (2“F). 5.5. Sieves-standard, woven-wire, square-
12、hole, of 6.3 mm (1/4 in.) and 9.5 mm (3/8 in.) size, in accordance with M 92. 6. MATERIALS 6.1. Aggregates-Prepare the aggregates such that 100 percent passes a 9.5-mm (3/8-in.) sieve and is retained on a 6.3-mm (/ that is, no bare spots are permissible. Water Zmmersion-Transfer the coated aggregate
13、 to a 600-mL glass container. Cover immediately with 400 mL of distilled water at room temperature (approximately 25C (77F). Allow the coated aggregate to remain immersed in the water for 16 to 18 hours. Visual Estimation of the Coated Area in Stripping Test-Without disturbing or agitating the coate
