10、er boss i n 1983. For the f i r s t time I saw him at the eighth WCEE held i n San Francisco i n t h e following year, I f e l t as i f my small body became shrunk because the great professor personally greeted m e j u s t a f t e r my presentation. The US/NZ/Japan Cooperative Science Program on Str
11、uctural Design of Reinforced Concrete Beam-Column J o i n t s f o r Strong Earthquakes was c a r r i e d o u t from 1983 t o 1989. I attended the seminars as my main research work corresponded with the subject of t h e program. By a t t e n d i n g t h e seminars I found o u t t h a t n a t i o n a
12、l i t i e s and p e r s o n a l i t i e s were r e f l e c t e d i n t h e ways of research and was given a g r e a t impact by a c t i v e discussions of Professor Paulay. I a r r i v e d i n New Zealand t o c a r r y o u t research under Professor Paulay a t University of Canterbury f o r e i g h
13、t months from t h e summer of 1984 ( i t was w i n t e r i n New Zealand though.) A t that t i m e my family and I received h i s kind assistance both i n public and private. M y account i n a bank i n New Zealand has been under h i s c o n t r o l s i n c e w e l e f t there. I n a l l t h e wide w
14、orld, maybe t h e r e is no one, except me, who has t h e g r e a t professor manage ones bank account. The reason why everyone highly respects him is that he is warm-hearted. Tom Paulay taught m e during t h e e i g h t months i n t h e following way: w e should theorize f i r s t to explain a mech
15、anism of phenomena and then check or complement the theory by experiments. In t h i s way w e can comprehend behavior of R/C structures and lead adequate design methods. M y research work is still experiment- oriented, but I am making great efforts t o master the way a f t e r Paulay . It is widely
16、known that the earth rotation on its axis makes a s w i r l p o o l counterclockwise i n t h e Northern Hemisphere and clockwise i n t h e Southern Hemisphere. Seeing New Zealand researchers give a different viewpoint, I have a feeling that the c i r c u i t s o f thinking of people l i v i n g i n
17、t h e Northern and Southern Hemispheres are influenced by t h e e a r t h r o t a t i o n respectively. Toms e x c e l l e n t a b i l i t y of h i t t i n g on i d e a s and solving problems must be l e d by t h e twin c i r c u i t s of thinking developed by living i n Hungary and New Zealand. The
18、 s e v e n t i e t h birthday is a s p e c i a l anniversary f o r Japanese and is called koki. A literal meaning of the word is seldom. People seldom l i v e d u n t i l seventy y e a r s o l d i n former t i m e s when peoples l i f e span was about f i f t y . Therefore koki includes the meaning
19、with respect and admiration for such a long- lived people. I would l i k e t o celebrate the seventieth birthday of Tom who has won t h e r e s p e c t and admiration of a l l f o r h i s excellent research works and unusual wonderful personality.
