4、 Problem Number Problem Number 10-02-27 I. Problem Title Airport and Airline Practices to Improve and Facilitate Recycling of Materials from Aircraft II. Research Problem Statement Recycling is a critical aspect of ongoing efforts at airports and airlines to reduce environmental impacts. As airports
5、 throughout the country continue to implement and expand recycling programs, consideration should be given to their compatibility with airline recycling programs and the potential for increased recycling of materials from aircraft. Identifying practices and opportunities to improve the types and amo
6、unt of material recycled from on-board aircraft will serve to further both airlines and airports environmental sustainability objectives. Cost-effective recycling of materials from on-board aircraft presents many challenges. From an airline perspective, there are logistical challenges associated wit
7、h collecting, separating, and storing materials on-board for removal and recycling on the ground. Likewise, airport recycling programs are complicated by varying state and local requirements, local recycling capabilities, airport infrastructure, waste hauling contracts, and airside safety concerns,
8、among other factors. As a result of these complexities, airport recycling programs across the country can vary significantly. III. Objective The objective of this research is to analyze current airport recycling programs to identify practices to improve the recycling of materials from on-board aircr
9、aft, including suggested improvements to increase the amount and type of materials that may be cost-effectively recycled. The project will include consultation with airport and airline environmental managers and research into innovative recycling practices. Given the increased focus on accounting fo
10、r improved environmental performance, the research should also identify suggested methods to properly allocate credit and economic benefit for recycled materials among the entities engaged in recycling at an airport. The resulting product will be a reference guide for airports contemplating initiati
