4、 PROBLEM STATEMENT Airport noise can have a dramatic effect on the people and wildlife in a large radius around airports. By understanding the noise variations and noise characteristics around airports, appropriate land-use decisions can be made and effective steps to reduce the impact of noise on p
5、eople and wildlife can be made. Present airport noise monitoring methods typically involve the permanent installation of noise monitoring stations at select locations. A major airport noise monitoring network may have only about 12 noise sensors spread over many square miles. The 12 data point are t
6、ypically “fit“ to a theoretical model in order to predict noise contours throughout the community surrounding an airport. Substantial error in the theoretical noise contours can greatly over estimate (or under estimate) noise levels in a given area. The noise contours can be much more accurately det
7、ermined by installing many more noise monitoring stations; however, this would be cost prohibitive. Smaller airports typically have no permanent noise monitoring capabilities. Nonetheless, these small airports can have a significant effect on surrounding communities and wildlife, especially in quiet
8、 rural areas where background noise levels are very low. Operational budgets of these small airports are limited and the expense and maintenance of noise stations is not acceptable. III. OBJECTIVE The objective of this research is to develop cost-effective technologies directly measure and monitor n

RESEARCH PROPOSED By exploiting the miniature wireless technologies and microelectronics that are now commonplace, it is possible to develop and implement low-cost, compact noise monitoring stations. Ideally, such a noise monitor should be fully autonom

The data from a network of these “smart sensors“ would be wirelessly transmitted to a central receiver, merged and processed automatically for display on a web site in near real- time. I
