2、isture content of a soil as a percentage of its dry mass, using a hotplate to dry the sample. The hotplate drying method is a rapid method and is considered less accurate than the standard method (see AS 1289.2.1.1). This method is not suitable for soil that has a significant clay fraction or for so

(b) Suitable balance with limit of performance as shown in Table 1. (c) A heat-tolerant and
6、 corrosion-resistant metal container or tray (if not using an electric frypan). (d) A palette knife of convenient size. 7、MEASUREMENT Sample size (see AS 1289.1.1) Limit of performance of balance not greater than g g 100 0.05 100 and 500 0.5 500 5 4 PROCEDURE The procedure shall be as follows: (a) Prepare a suitable size representative sub-sample of soil in accordance with AS 1289.1.1. (b) Determine the mass (ma) of a
8、clean and dry container. Place the sub-sample in the container. Determine the mass of the container with soil (mb). (c) Place the contents of the container in the electric frypan or place the metal container plus moist soil on the heat source. Heat the sub-sample until it is just hot enough to cause
9、 steam to be emitted from the sample. Maintain this temperature while the soil is drying, disturbing the sample frequently with the palette knife to assist the evaporation of moisture, taking care to ensure that no soil is lost. (d) When the sub-sample appears dry, remove the container with soil or
10、return the sub- sample from the heating device to the original container, which has been cleaned and dried, and allow cooling until it is warm to touch. NOTE: The drying time period will vary with the type of soil and size of sample. It is suggested that, when a large number of moisture content dete
11、rminations are to be made with one type of soil, several different periods of heating should be tried initially to determine the period required for complete drying, and this period be used as the minimum time required for heating of the sample. (e) Determine the mass of the container with soil (mic
12、) while the container is still warm. (f) Place the container with sub-sample or place the sub-sample from the heating device into the original container with the soil in the heating device and then reheat for at least a further 20 min and repeat Steps (d) and (e). (g) Repeat Step (f) until the loss
