Figures from the China National Tourist Office (CNTO) show that there
8、was a rise in the number of domestic leisure travellers on the mainland from 744mn in 2000 to 1.9bn in 2009, a particularly impressive increase given that the number of foreign tourist arrivals declined in 2008-2009. 13、nes; while China Southern Airlines merged with China Northern Airlines and Xinjiang Airlines. This left Air China, China Eastern and China Southern as the principal players, while Shanghai Airlines was lower in the rankings. Air China is a listed company in Hong Kong and London, although the state r
14、etains a significant stake in the firm. As of January 2011, Air China operates a fleet of 262 aircraft (271 on order), serving 196 domestic, 81 international and eight regional routes. China Eastern has a fleet of 263 aircraft, while China Southern has 340. There is also a burgeoning budget airline
15、sector, dominated by privately owned carriers such as Spring Airlines and Shenzen Airlines. In one of the biggest recent shakeups of Chinas airline industry, China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines announced in July 2009 that they were to merge. This was as a result of declining revenues for both airlin
16、es and indicated a desire to maximise efficiency in a difficult economic climate. In October, the airlines said a merger restructuring plan had been approved by the shareholders of both airlines. The carriers, which had been code-sharing since July 2009, have been re-launched as New China Eastern. T
17、he merged airline has a fleet of 331 aircraft and flies to 151 flight destinations. China Eastern launched a new cargo airline on January 1 2011, saying that the new subsidiary was a combination of the China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines cargo operations and marked the ongoing merger. China Eastern
18、was looking to expand its cargo operations, having bought a 51% stake in the Shanghai-based Great Wall carrier in March 2010. In April 2007, China Southern applied to the CAAC to form a new carrier, Chongqing Airlines, in partnership with Chongqing Development and Investment. The new carrier is base
19、d at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport and offers domestic services in south west China. The new airline flew its inaugural flight in July 2007. It operates four Airbus A320s and three Airbus A319s. In summer 2009, regional airline Joy Air launched operations. The carrier is jointly owned by
20、China Eastern (5%) and the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (95%) and is based at Xian Xianyang International Airport. The airline flies between medium-sized cities in central and western China, and its flight schedule is designed to connect with China Eastern flights. China Tourism Report Q2
21、2011 Business Monitor International Ltd Page 19 In June 2010, Cathay Pacific agreed to buy a 49% stake in Air China Cargo, which was previously 100% owned by Air China. Cooperation will now take place on a joint venture basis, with Shanghai and Beijing remaining the main regional hubs. In line with
22、the rest of Chinas aviation industry, China Southern reported a full-year loss for 2008. The company made a loss of US$705.8mn, after posting a profit of US$269mn the previous year. However, the companys loss was not due to a decline in business but more to an increasingly adverse operating environm
23、ent. Indeed, its revenues rose by 1.6% y-o-y, to US$8.1bn. Operating costs rose sharply, to US$9.0bn, a 16.6% increase y-o-y. In particular, China Southern suffered from the steep rise in fuel prices in H108 and it expected its operating costs to reduce in 2009s lower oil price environment. China So
24、uthern began to recover strongly in 2010. In H110, profit increased by 54.0% y-o-y to CNY1.2bn, up from a loss of CNY574mn in H109. The airline attributed this strong performance to an increase in passenger traffic and the sale of its share in a maintenance company. This sale was designed to reduce
