Iraqs Deputy Minister of Electricity Imad Al-ani met South Koreas Construction Minister Kang Dong-suk to discuss ways for firms to p
14、articipate in projects to rebuild Iraqs roads, bridges and utility works. ? Renewable technology is expected to be a fast-growing sector, with the South Korean government announcing plans to invest US$80bn into renewable energy infrastructure between 2009 and 2029. ? The South Korean government plan
15、s to invest KRW72trn (US$66.2bn) to construct 4,955km of railway track and spend KRW70trn (US$64.4bn) to build 5,470km of roads by the 2020. Threats ? Some firms may face cash-flow problems given the recent fall in domestic demand, which may lead to job losses in the sector. ? The ongoing troubles i
16、n the Middle East, a major source of projects for South Korean companies, could impact profitability for an indefinite period of time. 17、oul to other major cities, and South Korea boasts eight international and seven domestic airports. The main gateway to the country is the Incheon International Airport, which was declared airport of the year in 2009, and is now in line for a US$3.1bn upgrade, which includes a new terminal. Seouls fo
18、rmer international airport, Gimpo, now mostly handles domestic flights. The increased congestion resulting from business activity and the growing population in the greater Seoul area is causing problems that necessitate the further development of the road and railway system. As part of the efforts t
19、o create new development corridors across the country, the government has been building a high-speed railway system, the KTX, modelled on Frances TGV. The first KTX route opened in March 2004, connecting Seoul and Pusan in the south east, and Mokpo in the southwest, in an inverted Y-shaped route, sp
20、litting at Daejeon. At present, the two branch lines run on conventional tracks. These are expected to be upgraded to full high-speed rail tracks between 2010 and 2017, which should substantially cut journey times. The long-term goal of the South Korean government is to connect its railway system wi
21、th that of North Korea, allowing for the export of goods to Europe via the Chinese and Russian railway networks. This concept has been dubbed the Iron Silk Road. However, the cost of revamping the Norths railways, and Pyongyangs reluctance to fully open to the outside world, have proved to be major
22、obstacles. Seoul itself has one of the worlds largest underground railway systems with almost 300km of routes, which are continually being expanded. It also has an extensive regional commuter rail network. The cities of Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju and Pusan also have metro systems. Saturated Do
