、arch 1995. Five papers were presented at the first session titied: ?Performance of Polymer Concrete Overlays Part I: Over 10 Years?, and six papers were presented at the second session titied: ?Performance of Polymer Concrete Overlays Part II: Less than 10 Years Old?. All eleven papers published in
、this volume are case studies. Since different types of overlays-including thin overlays, polymer, epoxy and sulfur concrete are successfully in service on bridge decks, highways and garages, these authors feel that it is important to share their knowledge with the readers of this publication. These

I would like to thank all authors for their contributions, and all members (and non-members) of Committee 548 who reviewed the manuscripts. Stella L. Marusin Editor iii Copyrig

、r and Peter Mendis Synopsis: Repair and maintenance of aging bridge decks and parking decks has become increasingly important due to concrete and steel deterioration from exposure to deicing salts, acid rain, and other hostile elements. Rapid curing thin polymer concrete overlay offers a cost- effec
、tive option in protecting and extending the service life of the deck. The paper discusses the performance, physical properties and application techniques using a flexible epoxy polymer overlay. The low modulus epoxy binder is designed to achieve a balance between toughness and flexibility. With the
、use of gap graded aggregates, the flexible epoxy binder system provides low permeability, enhanced skid resistance while accommodating thermal and mechanical stresses. The outstanding performance and service life of flexible epoxy overlays has been documented in the SHRP study in 1991. The importanc
、e of proper surface preparation and quality control during application is critical to the success and durability of the overlay.
