、eel circlips metric series. First published in 1963 this British Standard has now been revised under the authority of the Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards Committee and with the fullest co-operation of manufacturers and users of circlips. In the case of the major radial depth dimensions, so
、me manufacturers, for economic reasons, will need a period of time in which to change to the values of the British Standard. The British manufacturers have given every assurance that the British Standard dimensions will be adopted in full as normal tool replacement occurs and, in the interim period,
、 the user is assured that the circlips offered will not vary by more than 20 % from the mean values for major radial depth. The standard is a companion-work to BS 3673-2, Carbon steel “E clips” and BS 3673-3, “C clips”. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
、 contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. 21、0-19991 1 Scope This British Standard relates to internal and external circlips in both inch and metric dimensional ranges, manufactured from carbon steel. Requirements for material, heat treatment, hardness and manufacture are laid down, together with dimensions and tolerances. The requirements for
、 the finish and testing of the circlips are also given. NOTEFor reference to metric sizes see BS 3673-4. 2 Nomenclature For the purposes of this British Standard the nomenclature of Figure 1 has been adopted together with the following definitions: 1) Nominal size. The nominal size of a circlip is e
、qual to the nominal diameter of shaft or bore for which the circlip is designed. 2) Radial flatness error (dish). The minimum distance separating two parallel planes which just contain the sectional profile of a circlip, the free ends of which are positioned in a common plane in order to discount an
、y spiral effect which may be present. 3 Material Circlips shall be manufactured from material conforming to a suitable composition selected from the BS 1449 En 421) range. Alternatively, carbon steels having equivalent mechanical properties may be used provided that the circlips are capable of satis
、fying the test requirements of Clause 8. 4 Heat treatment and hardness Circlips shall be hardened and tempered so that the minimum hardness after tempering shall be as follows: 1) BS 1449, “Steel plate, sheet and strip” Up to and including 3 in designating size480 HV Above 3 in, up to and including
、5 in designating size460 HV Above 5 in, up to and including 8 in designating size440 HV Above 8 in designating size400 HV Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Wed Nov 29 04:04:56 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 3673-1:1968 2 BSI 10-1999 Figure 1 Nomenclature of circlips Licensed

Equivalent hardness values on other approved hardness scales ma
、y be used in accordance with BS 8603). 5 Form, dimensions and tolerances The form, dimensions and tolerances of internal and external circlips shall be as given in Table 1 and Table 2, and in accordance with the following (see also Clause 9): 5.1 Holes (or slots). Each end of each circlip shall have
、 a hole (or, in the case of external circlips, a hole or a slot) in order to facilitate assembly by use of circlips pliers. The holes (or slots) shall be so positioned that when the circlip is fitted in a groove of appropriate dimensions, the hole (or slot) shall be clear of the external diameter of
、 the shaft, or, in the case of internal circlips, clear of the internal diameter of the bore. The diameter of the holes (or width of slots) shall be in accordance with Table 1 and Table 2 and sufficient material shall be retained around each hole (or on either side of each slot) to ensure that no pe
、rmanent distortion of the circlip ends shall result when circlips pliers are applied during assembly of the circlips under normal conditions. 5.2 Lugs. Circlips up to and including 6 in designating size shall have integrally formed lugs. Above this size, whether or not the circlips have lugs shall b
、e the subject of agreement between purchaser and manufacturer. The profile of the lug may vary at the discretion of the manufacturer provided that the following conditions are met: 1) External circlips: When passed over a shaft of the maximum diameter as given in Table 1, the circlip shall be capabl
、e of passing through clearance diameter E. 2) Internal circlips: When passed through a bore of the minimum diameter as given in Table 2, the circlip shall be capable of passing over clearance diameter C. 5.3 Lug fillet. A fillet of minimum radius equal to the maximum thickness T of the circlip shall
、 be formed adjacent to each lug. The fillet shall blend smoothly with the lug profile and with the minor radial depth. At no point around the contour shall the fillet undercut either the lug profile or the minor radial depth (see Figure 1.) 5.4 Minor radial depth. The minor radial depth (see Figure
、1) shall be not less than the maximum thickness T of the circlip. 5.5 Tolerance on radial flatness. Departures from radial flatness see Clause 2 2) shall be not greater than the values stated in 9.6. 6 Finish Sharp edges shall be removed from the circlips, which shall be free from scale, burrs, crac
、ks, laminations and other deleterious defects. Unless any alternative finish is specified by the purchaser, the circlips shall be self-finished, chemically and/or thermally blued or blacked, or phosphated in accordance with BS 31894). Suitable temporary anti-corrosion treatment shall be applied to t
、he circlips in accordance with BS 1133-65). NOTEIt is well known that acid pickling prior to plating, even if carefully carried out, is liable to cause hydrogen embrittlement. Whilst this may to some degree be neutralized by low temperature heat treatment, it is recommended that plating as a protect
、ive coating against corrosion should not be applied to circlips. 2) BS 427, “Method for Vickers hardness test”, Part 1, “Testing of metals”. 3) BS 860, “Table of approximate comparison hardness scales”. 4) BS 3189, “Phosphate treatment of iron and steel for protection against corrosion”. 5) BS 1133,

、 shall bear the manufacturers name or trademark and the appropriate size-designating reference number. The reference numbers shall be as given in Table 1 and Table 2. The basis of these numbers is as follows: The nominal size of the circlip in accordance with Column 2 of Table 1 and Table 2 to two d
、ecimal places, but omitting the decimal point and adding, as appropriate, the prefix S (shaft) indicating an external circlip or B (bore) indicating an internal circlip. Examples 8 Tests Each circlip shall be capable of passing the following tests: 8.1 Permanent set and grip 8.1.1 External circlips.
、 For this test a multi-stepped mandrel in accordance with Figure 2 shall be used. The circlips shall be mounted on diameter Y of the mandrel and then caused to follow and maintain contact with the contours of each step in turn until the circlip reaches diameter X. The circlip shall firmly grip diame
、ter X and on removal, shall show no visible defect. Provision shall be made to ensure that at all times during the test the circlip is normal to the axis of the mandrel. 8.1.2 Internal circlips. For this test, a multi-stepped cylinder in accordance with Figure 3 shall be used. The circlip shall be m
、ounted within bore Y of the cylinder and then caused to follow and maintain contact with the contours of each step in turn until the circlip reaches bore X. The circlip shall firmly grip within the bore X and on removal, shall show no visible defect. Provision shall be made to ensure that at all tim
、es during the test the circlip is normal to the axis of the cylinder. Other means of testing, including automatic devices, may be employed provided that the conditions imposed by the tests outlined above are simulated exactly. NOTEBy “firmly grip” is meant that with the mandrel (or test bore) positi
、oned vertically, the circlip shall remain correctly in position on the X diameter, unaided and under its own weight. S 0075 = External circlip to suit in nominal diameter shaft.
