、6 Foreword This Part of BS 7394 has been prepared by Technical Committee CH/78 under the direction of the Health and Environment Sector Board at the request of the Association for Consumer Research (ACRE) and the Department of Health. This Part of BS 7394 supersedes BS 7394 : Part 1 : 1991, which is
、 withdrawn. BS 7394 was prepared because of the need to establish a means of specifying the attributes necessary for complete spectacles. This Part of BS 7394 is intended to cover certain ready-to-wear spectacles which are commonly available for retail, whilst Part 2 is appropriate for spectacles su
、pplied against a prescription. BS 7394 : Part 2 includes a lens retention requirement and test. It was always the intention that this requirement should be included in this Part of BS 7394 and, hence, it has now been introduced into this edition; 5.5 and annex E provide, respectively, the requiremen
、t and the test procedure. Consideration will be given at the next revision of this Part of BS 7394 to the inclusion of a requirement for abrasion resistance when an abrasion test has been developed internationally. It is also intended in the future to include in both Parts 1 and 2 a test for enduran
、ce based on that given in appendix B of BS 6625 : Part 1 : 1985 after the modified procedure has been verified. This test, too, is under consideration for possible inclusion in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) standards for
、 spectacles and spectacle frames. Part 1 of this standard is applicable to the product as it is supplied to the wearer. This standard does not specify the requirements for protective spectacles or sun-glasses; these are covered by BS EN 166 and BS 2724, respectively. Product certification. Users of
、this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of third party certification of product conformity with this British Standard based on testing and continuing product surveillance, which may be coupled with assessment of a suppliers quality systems against the appropriate standard in t
、he BS EN ISO 9000 series. Enquiries as to the availability of third party certification schemes are forwarded by BSI to the Association of Certification Bodies. If a third party certification scheme does not already exist, users should consider approaching an appropriate body from the list of Associ
、ation members. Alternatively, users of this British Standard may wish to consider the desirability of assessment and registration of a suppliers quality systems against the appropriate standard in the BS EN ISO 9000 series by a third party certification body. Specification 1 Scope 1.1 This Part of BS 7394 specifies requirements for complete ready-to-wear spectacles incorporating a pair o
、f near-vision lenses, each with equal nominal positive spherical power not exceeding 4 D, where the sale is wholly for the purposes of correcting, remedying or relieving presbyopia. NOTE. The unit for expressing spherical power is the reciprocal metre (m-1). The special name for this unit is the dio
、ptre, for which the symbol D is used. 1.2 This Part of BS 7394 does not apply to the following: a) spectacles prepared in accordance with a prescription or prescriptions supplied or provided by a qualified practitioner; b) spectacles to be used for eye protection (these spectacles are specified in B
、S EN 166); c) spectacles without optical power to be used as non-prescription sun glare eye protectors (these spectacles are specified in BS 2724); d) spectacles for children under the age of 16 years 1). NOTE. Annex A contains recommendations on the design of ready-to-wear spectacles. 2 References
、2.1 Normative references This Part of BS 7394 incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These normative references are made at the appropriate places in the text and the cited publications are listed on the inside back cover. For dated references, only the edit

、-wear spectacles Ready-to-wear spectacles in which the optical portions and the mounting elements are manufactured as one piece. 4 Optical characteristics 4.1 Tolerances The tolerances on the manufacturers declared values for the spherical power (see 7.1) and the centration distance (see 7.2), as we

NOTE. Recommendations regarding optical characteristics that are subjective (
、and cannot therefore be specified) are given in annex B. 5 Performance characteristics NOTE. It is strongly recommended that, before glazing, the frames of glazed ready-to-wear spectacles (see 3.3) should have been shown to conform to 3.3 of BS 6625 : Part 1 : 1985. 5.1 Conditioning of test specimen
、s Immediately before starting a sequence of tests, the test specimens shall be conditioned for at least 4 h in an atmosphere maintained at a temperature of 23 C5 C and at a relative humidity of 65 C10 %. 5.2 Test sequence 5.2.1 Five specimen spectacles shall be conditioned as specified in 5.1 and th

、BS 7394 : Part 1 : 1996 1)Marking BS 7394 : Part 1 : 1996 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore solely the r
、esponsibility of the person making the claim. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable. 5.2.2 After each test, if all five specimens pass, the product shall be deemed to conform to the requirement for that test. If one of the
、specimens fails in any test, a second set of five specimens shall be tested. If all five specimens of the second set pass, the product shall be deemed to conform to that test. If one or more of the specimens in the second set fails, the product shall be deemed not to conform to this Part of BS 7394.
、 If two or more of the first set of five specimens fail in any test, the product shall be deemed not to conform to the requirements of this Part of BS 7394. 5.3 Corrosion When the specimens are tested as described in annex C and compared with an untested specimen, there shall be no visible corrosion
、 or change of colour of the optical portion of the spectacles, sides and rims when viewed with normal or corrected vision. Any corrosion of hinges or dowel screws shall not render the side(s) inoperable. Any corrosion or discoloration of the nose pads shall be disregarded. 5.4 Ignitability When the
、specimens are tested as described in annex D, there shall be no continuation of combustion of a specimen after removal of the test flame (see 5.2.2). 5.5 Lens retention Except for rimless, semi-rimless and integral ready-to-wear spectacles (3.4), when a specimen is tested in accordance with annex E,
、 neither lens shall be dislodged, wholly or partially, from its location in the frame. NOTE. Recommendations on the glazing of spectacles are given in B.3.1. 6 Dimensional characteristics 6.1 Measurements The spectacle dimensions shall be measured and recorded as specified in BS 3199. NOTE. It is re
、commended that any screw threads should conform to BS 3172. 6.2 Tolerances The tolerances on the manufacturers stated dimensions (see 7.2) of the spectacles shall be as specified in table 1.
