、n turn are factory applied to the interior of ferrous pipes and fittings; it is not intended to exclude the use and development of suitable alternatives. The intended purpose of the bitumen seal coat is to prevent leaching of lime (Ca(OH)2) and other hydroxides from the cement into the water supply,
、 potentially causing an elevation of pH in excess of the prescribed concentration or value of 9.5, as laid down by the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 1989 as amended by the Water Supply (Water Quality) (Amendment) Regulations 19911; and the Water Supply (Water Quality)(Scotland) Regulation
、s 19902. This standard is intended to cover the following service application areas: factory applied bitumen seal coatings for cement mortar lined ductile iron pipes and fittings; potable water applications. This standard gives requirements for routine testing for visual appearance, coating thicknes
、s, adhesion and odour; it also gives type test requirements for water quality effects (pH and alkalinity), durability, and abrasion resistance. The test methods referred to in this standard are either specified in British Standard or other appropriate national and/or international standards, or in t

These normative references are made at the appropriate places in the text and the cited publications are listed on the inside back cover.
、For dated references, only the edition cited applies; any subsequent amendments to or revisions of the cited publication apply to this standard only when incorporated in the reference by amendment or revision. Editions of these publications current at the time of issue of this standard are listed on the inside back page, but reference should be made to the latest editions. 3 Definit
、ions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply. 3.1 batch Pipes produced in a discrete production run. 3.2 cement mortar lining A cementitious lining internally applied to ductile iron pipes and fittings. (See BS EN 545 : 1995.) 3.3 ductile iron A cast iron in which g
、raphite is present substantially in spheroidal form. 3.4 fitting Casting other than a pipe which allows pipeline deviation, change of direction or bore. In addition flanged-socket pieces, flanged-spigot pieces and collars are also classified as fittings. 3.5 manufacturer The producer of the bitumen

、r flanged socket pieces, flanged spigot pieces and collars, which are classified as fittings. 3.8 product The bitumen seal coated, cement mortar lined iron pipe or fitting. 3.9 seal coat A bitumen coating applied over a cement mortar lining to provide a barrier between the lining and the contents of
、 the pipeline. 3.10 test sample A seal coated, cement mortar lined pipe taken from a batch. 3.11 type test Proof of design test which is done once and only repeated after change of design. Supply water quality data for such pipelines should be discussed between the prospective client and the pipe manufacturer so
、as to ensure the suitability of the product for use. NOTE 2. Users should also be aware of the manufacturers instructions and any other appropriate conditions defined for the product within the list of substances, products and processes, approved under regulations 25 and 26 of the Water Supply (Wate
、r Quality) Regulations 1989, as amended by the Water Supply (Water Quality) (Amendment) Regulations1)and with the Water Supply (Water Quality) (Scotland) Regulations 1990, the product shall conform to the aforementioned regulations. 5 Materials The seal coat material shall conform to the requirement
、s of BS 3416 : 1991. The iron pipe or fitting and its cement mortar lining shall conform to the requirements of BS EN 545 : 1995. 6 Coating thickness The bitumen seal coat shall have a minimum dry film thickness of at least 50 mm, and a mean dry film thickness of not less than 70 mm. 7 Type test req
、uirements 7.1 Number of tests The following tests shall be carried out once on pipe samples for approval purposes only. 7.2 Water quality (pH and alkalinity) When tested in accordance with the method 4, seal coat leaching resistance, defined in ANSI/AWWA C104/A21-4. 95 3, using test water, as define
、d in annex E of this standard, a seal coated cement mortar lined pipe shall impart to test water, during any 24 h test period, an increase of no more than 25 mg/l total alkalinity and shall not cause the pH of the water to exceed 9.5. 7.3 Durability When tested in accordance with annex E, for a peri
、od of six months, the seal coat applied to the pipe section shall not fail in such a way that the underlying cement lining becomes exposed and leaches lime, so as to cause the pH of the test water to exceed 9.5 after a 24 h contact time. 7.4 Abrasion resistance When tested in accordance with annex F
、, the seal coat applied to the pipe section shall not fail in such a way that the underlying cement lining becomes exposed by abrasion or total removal of the seal coat so as to cause the pH of the test water to exceed 9.5 in any 24 h test period. This clause specifies the minimum testing and inspection requirements which are necessary in order to demonstrate a continuing satisfact
、ory level of seal coat quality. Testing and inspection procedures shall be written by the manufacturer, based on the requirements of this standard. 8.2 Test samples Production quality control checks shall be carried out on seal coated pipes or fittings as opposed to separate prepared test pieces. 8.
、3 Sampling frequency Production quality control shall be carried out in accordance with appropriate sampling plans. These sampling plans shall take account of batch size and variation in storage conditions, and shall be specified in the manufacturers process control system. 8.4 Visual appearance Eac
、h seal coated test sample shall be examined visually. The seal coat shall be free of any defects likely to be detrimental to coating performance (such as blisters, sags, runs and uncoated areas). 8.5 Coating thickness Each test sample shall be checked at the end for seal coat thickness by either det
、ermination of wet film thickness, in accordance with annex A, or determination of dry film thickness, in accordance with either annex B or annex C. 8.6 Adhesion Each test sample shall be tested for seal coat adhesion at the end in accordance with the requirements of ASTM D 3359-95 4, test method A.
、The adhesion level shall fall within the range of 3A to 5A. Any other test method having proven correlation with this reference method may also be used. The area damaged during testing shall be repaired by a specified procedure. 8.7 Odour Pipe samples only shall be tested in accordance with the meth
、od described in annex D. Pipe batches shall not be released by the manufacturer until test samples exhibit an acceptable level of odour. NOTE. It is not normally considered necessary to test fittings for odour as they generally only constitute a minor proportion of a pipeline; however, some installa
、tions are fittings intensive (for instance pumping stations) and odour tests may therefore be carried out on seal coated fittings by agreement between the manufacturer and the customer. 8.8 Rework Where non-conforming product is identified, any rework which is carried out shall be such that the prod
、uct meets the requirements of this standard. 9 Marking Each bitumen seal coated pipe or fitting shall be identified with the following information: a) manufacturers name or mark; and for pipes only: b) either the batch or code, or date of manufacture (effective date of seal coat application); and c)
、 the number of this standard. NOTE 1. Marking BS 7892 : 1997 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is solely the claimants responsibility. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable. NOTE 2. Where pipes are bundled, the markings required by b) and/or c) may be applied to the bundle rather than to individual pipes.
