、2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 7946:1997 BSI 02-20001 1 Scope This handbook contains graphical symbols to be used on equipment and systems in the field of audio, video and audiovisual engineering. The symbols contained in this handbook are selected from IEC 417 and other relevant documents. The
、 editorial form of the document was created by IEC/TC 84, but the drawings of the symbols and the text of titles and applications are in line with IEC 417 and other documents. 2 Introduction The first symbols on audio and video equipment were mainly designed to overcome the lack of printing area for
、 textual explanation in various languages, or to overcome the difficulty in producing separate models for various linguistic or geographical areas. Later on, symbols improved the appearance of the equipment, or simply were necessary because of the growing number of functions in small areas. After in
、itially designing symbols according to the appearance of the function or piece of equipment (loudspeaker, lamp, battery), later the movement or operational effect was used (forward play, eject). On a major scale, symbols were used for very different functions. At first glance, the symbol for an ampl
、ifier looks very much the same as for “forward” and the symbol near the button to close or open elevator doors seems much like those used on recent video cassette recorders. This book arranges the symbols according to a logical classification. Intensive discussion took place about how to arrange the
、 symbols; the best solution being the classification according to function. As a result, a mix between function and appearance was chosen, in which another concept was also used, namely the combination of symbols. In the latter case, a “host” symbol uses another symbol to indicate a subfunction. A c
、ombination of a generic and supplementary symbol can lead to a complete new series of symbols, for example, the teletext mode as a combination symbol and at the same time as a new generic symbol. In some cases, no logical structure seems evident, as in the symbols for picture functions of a colour t
、elevision receiver, but nevertheless they are grouped because of the functional relationship. This handbook not only gives a historic view on some of the development of symbols, but also gives, for the audio and video domain, help and inspiration for further developments. An unusual feature of this
、handbook is the general survey of symbols. This does not consist of numbers or names, but gives a complete spreadsheet-view of all audio and video symbols. 3 Normative references All the symbols can also be found in the documents referred to hereafter.
