9、ttee and is the English language version of EN 169 “Personal eye-protection Filters for welding and related techniques Transmittance requirements and recommended utilisation”, published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). EN 169 was produced as a result of international discussions
10、in which the United Kingdom took an active part. EN 169:1992 incorporates only minor editorial changes to EN 169:1986 but has been approved by CEN Member Bodies under the weighted voting procedures introduced in 1988 to coincide with the introduction of “New Approach” Directives from the Commission
11、of the European Community. The scope of this standard includes transmittance requirements, which were previously included in the scope of BS 679:1989. However, BS 679:1989 also contained additional requirements, which are contained in EN 166, EN 167 and EN 168. BS 679:1989 will therefore be withdraw
12、n when EN 166, EN 167 and EN 168 are published. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obliga

21、reword This European Standard was drawn up by the CEN/TC 85 Technical Committee “Eye protection equipment”, the Secretariat of which is held by AFNOR. The international standard ISO 4850 “Personal eye-protectors for welding and related techniques Filters Utilisation and transmittance requirements” d
22、rawn up by the ISO/TC 94/SC 6 “Personal eye protection” was used as a basis for this European Standard. This European Standard supersedes EN 169:1986. In accordance with Common CEN/CENELEC Rules, the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finlan
23、d, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by April

26、 intended to protect operators performing work involving welding, braze-welding, arc gouging and plasmajet cutting. The other applicable requirements for these types of filters are given in EN 166. Guidance on the selection and use of these filters is given in annex A. The specifications for welding

29、abulary. 3 Designation and identification The complete table of numbering of filters is given in clause 5 of EN 166. The tables concerning the identification of oculars and frame form the subject of clause 9 of EN 166. The scale number of these filters comprises only the shade number corresponding t
30、o the filter, from 1.2 to 16 (see Table 1). 4 Transmittance requirements 4.1 General requirements The definitions of transmittance are given in EN 165. The determination of luminous transmittance is described in clause 6 of EN 167. The transmittance requirements for filters used in welding and relat
31、ed techniques are given in Table 1. 34、n of welding operations be protected. Filters of scale number 1.2 to 4 should be used for this purpose. However, if the levels of risks require it, filters of higher scale numbers should be used. Especially when the welders assistant would be at the same distance from the arc as the welder, both per
35、sons should use filters with the same scale numbers. A.2 Remarks A.2.1 For a scale number corresponding to the work conditions specified in Table 2, Table 3 and Table 4 the protection in the ultraviolet and infra-red ranges is sufficient, Table 1 having been determined so that this should be the cas
36、e. The use of a higher scale number would not necessarily provide better protection and would give in return disadvantages indicated in A.2.3. A.2.2 If the use of filters selected from the tables produces a feeling of discomfort, the working environment and the eyesight of the operator should be exa
37、mined. A.2.3 It can be harmful to use filters with too high a scale number (too dark) as this would force the operator to move too close to the radiation source and to inhale harmful fumes. A.2.4 For work carried out in the open air in strong natural light, it is possible to use a protective filter
38、of one scale number higher.
