Air-actuated grips are advantageous for materials that tend to “neck“ into the grips since uniform pressure is maintained throughout the test. 4.3 Specimen Cutter A device tha
3、t will give straight, clean, parallel edges with no nicks, uncut areas, or other imperfections shall be used for cutting the specimens to the proper width, where this is required. In most cases, the tape specimen will be tested in the width supplied. 4.4 Thickness Gauge A suitable thickness measurin
4、g device, capable of being read to 0,00002 inch (0.00050mm), shall be used for measuring the thickness of the specimens. Note: Where specimens of tape with a base thickness of 0.001 inch (0.025mm) or more are being tested a thickness measuring device capable of being read to 0.0001 inch (0.0025mm) m
5、ay be substituted. 4.5 Width Measuring Device A suitable width measuring device, capable of measuring to at least 0.003 inch (0.075mm) shall be used for measuring the width of the specimens. 5. CONDITIONS 5.1 All measurements shall be made under the following atmospheric conditions, 70 f 5F (21 k3“C

The test specimens shall consist of strips of uniform width and thickness at least 7 inches 6.2 The tape specimens will be tested as received, subject to the following: a. inch (25.4mm). The width of
9、 the specimen shall not be less than 0.12 inch (3.0mm) or greater than 1.0 b. Tape specimens will be tested in the width supplied, subject to the limitations of step a. above. If the tape is wider than 1.0 inch, a specimen of suitable width shall be cut from the center of the tape. If the specimen i
10、s cut in a direction other than longitudinal, the direction of cutting shall be indicated in the report. The utmost care shall be exercised in cutting specimens to prevent nicks or tears which are likely to cause premature failure. Note: Microscopic examination of the specimens may aid in detecting

13、 made of film whose tensile properties are known to be strongly dependent upon the rate of elongation, the rate of grip separation used should be selected to simulate as closely as possible the rate of strain to which the tape may be subjected in use. c. Balance, zero and calibrate the load weight a
14、nd recording system by the methods described in ASTM E4. 7.2 Verifying width, thickness measuring devices a. Calibrate the thickness measuring device by the methods described in ASTM D374. b. 16、easure the width of the specimen at several points along its length to the nearest 0.003 inch (0.075mm). Compute the average of these values. Record the average width, rounded off to three significant figures. Check that the individual measurements are within +2% of the average value. 7.4 Measuring
17、thickness of specimen Measure the total thickness of the specimen at several points to the nearest 0.00002 inch (0.00050mm). Check that the thickness is uniform to within 10% of the average thickness. Note: Where specimens of tape with a base thickness of 0.001 inch (0.025mm) or more are being teste
