1、 Z Zacconi, Ermete b. 1857; d. ? actor, Italy Born in Montecchio near Reggio Emilia, Zacconi had a successful acting career on stage, in part with Eleonora Duse, long before his limited appearances in cinema. For the most part, he played father figures, as in Gino Zaccarias Padre The Palace of Flame
2、s (1912), one of Italas first feature films; but he also took on other roles, such as the self- sacrificing hero in Lo Scomparso The Vanished One (1913). In his last film, Febo Maris LEmigrante The Emigrant (1915), Zacconi again played a father forced to separate from his young daughter (Valentina F
3、rascaroli). ANGELA DALLE VACCHE Zecca, Ferdinand b. 1864, Paris, France; d. 1947, Vincennes, France actor, filmmaker, producer, France A caf-concert artist, Ferdinand Zecca was hired in 1898 by Charles Path to make recordings using phonograph cylinders. In 1900, he attempted to make a short film tha
4、t synchronized with the text of Le Muet mlomane The Dumb Music Lover. The success of this experiment led Path to offer him to work at Path-Frres related to film production. Over the course of a few years, Zecca made numerous 40-meter films (up to two a day) for which he would devise subjects, paint
5、sets, and operate the camera. In addition, he sometimes acted in films by other filmmakers as they requested his collaboration. His own works tended towards a certain realism, as in Histoire dun crime The Story of a Crime (1901). In 1903, Zecca left Path-Frres to work for Gaumont. His activity there
6、 lasted but a few months, during which he shot a series of trick films, including Illusionniste renversant The Amazing Illusionist. Upon his return to Path-Frres in 1904, the Vincennes studios were being reorganized, and films now were being shot in a new Entries A-Z 1021 Montreuil studio. Zecca soo
7、n took over their direction, and from then on a large part of Paths output was placed under his control. Still, he continued to make films such as Bain des dames de la cour Court Ladies Bathing (1905). His responsibilities were further extended when he replaced Dupuis as head of the Vincennes studio
8、s. As a consequence, he was supervising the entire Path production by 19061907. This meant that he accepted or rejected proposed scripts, determined the length and budget of the films as well as the duration of shooting, and even devised recording rules for cameramen, favoring full-length framing. Z
9、ecca also was engaged in hiring directors, set decorators, and actors. His regular presence on the set made it possible for him to control the shooting and to ensure that what was being executed corresponded to what had been planned.
