In non-English speaking countries, the pattern is typically that English language dominates the harder sciences and specialist areas of medicine in journal, databases and to a l
9、esser extent books. Local languages dominate social sciences, textbooks, more practical topics like engineering and primary care medicine, and advertising-supported journals. Examples include Brazil, China and Japan which have large book markets in their local languages but spend the great majority
10、of their journal and database budgets on imported English language materials. Scandinavia, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Middle East have relatively small indigenous medical publishing industries. The English language is widely spoken, especially among professionals, so En
11、glish language imports do well in these markets. Most of the production of the leading medical publishers is in English, but many publish in a variety of languages. Elsevier publishes in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, among others. Springer publishes in German, French and Italian. Wol
12、ters Kluwer publishes in Spanish, French and Chinese. Currency Since this report is denominated in U.S. Dollars, exchange rates can distort the picture of this most international business. Book and Journal growth has commonly been in the low single digits in recent years, so a double-digit movement
