This specification covers the requirements for decorative striping paints applied over the body paint system. These materials are generally applied by hand with suitable

、ENTS. Striping materials are exterior top- coats whose performance and qualification requirements are covered by Specification GM4367M. However, the unique processing, narrow surface coverage and air dry development of properties of these materials results in specific rquire- ments. These are given
、along with references to GM4367M where applicable. Once qualified to these requirements, routine testing of finished materials is covered by specification GM4350M. 3.1 Material Requirements. The striping paint, before appli- cation and drying, must meet all material requirements detailed in specific
、ation GM4367M. 3.2 Performance Requirements. The following requirements are for the dry striping material over the intended body topcoat as a finished product system. For initial qualification, the striping paint must be evaluated over body topcoat which has been overbaked. Definitions of overbake a
、nd panel preparation details are given in 3.2.11. New striping paints must be evaluated as both single stripes and dual overlapping stripes. Unless otherwise indicated, striping shall be allowed to air dry for 72 h prior to imtiation of tests. 3.2.1 Film Thickness (ASTM D1186). The film build for a
、single painted stripe, measured after 72 h air drying, shall be wlthin the following range: 25 to 38 pm. 3.2.2 Mar Resistance (GM9539P). The striping shall have sufficient hardness and toughness to resist marring through normal handling, abrasion from car wash brushes, etc. Mar resistance shall be q
、ua1 or better than currently approved materials. 3.2.3 Cross Cut (X-Scribe) Tape Adhesion (GM9071P Method B). Initially, and following environmental exposure where indicated, stripe shall exhibit 99% minimum adhesion to body paint system and between dual applied stripes. Initial adhesion shall be ru
、n after air drying 30 minutes, 1 h. 24 h and 72 h after application. 3.2.4 Moisture Resistance (GM4465P). Following exposure for 96 h to 100% RH at 38 C and no more than 10 minutes recovery, the striping shall exhibit the following: 3.2.4.1 Appearance. No bhstering, milking or other change in appear
、ance. 3.2.4.2 Cross Cut (X-Scribe) Tape Adhesion (GM9071P), Method B). Minimum 99% adhesion to body pamt system and between dual stnpes. 3.2.5 Fuel Resistance (GM9SOlP). Test shall be performed with synthetic gasoline (45% toluol - 9981729, 55% naph- tha - 9981062). Sample shall be evaluated after 1
、0 immersion cycles consisting of 10 s immersion and 20 s dry off. There shall be no color change, loss of adhesion, crazing, unrecover- able softening or other detrimental effects. 3.2.6 Resistance To Assembly Plant And Maintenance Chemicals (GM9533P). Striping must exhibit resistance to oils, greas
、es, cleaning solvents, polishing compounds, etc. at least equivalent to current approved products. * NOTE: The striping paint is not expected to be impervious to materials such as brake fluids, concentrated acids or other aggressive chemicals without some permanent effect. 3.2.7 Cold Crack Cycle (GM
、9505P, Cycle A). After 15 cycles there shall be no cracking, crazing or peeling. 3.2.8 Flexibility (GM9503P). Coatings intended for use on flexible or semirigid substrates shall exhibit no cracking or induced substrate failure when subjected to bending. Testing shall be performed by bending over a m
、andrel whose diameter, along with the substrate thickness, determines the elongation capability of the coating. The striping material must be capable of elongation equal or greater than the flexible topcoat on which it is applied. 3.2.9 Impinging Water Spray Resistance. In some plant applications th
、e striping material may receive minimal air drying before being undergoing high pressure car washing or leak testing. For qualification, the supplier shall provide the minimum dry time required before the striping can be subjected to a high pressure water spray without loss of adhesion or other dele
、terious effect. Force drying with heat may be necessary in some plant applications where insufi- clent dry time is available. 3.2.10 Weatherability. The striping paint must meet the weatherability requirements of GM4367M with the following specific requirements for 12 and 24 months exposure: 3.2.10.
、1 Twelve months Florida exposure. There shall be no significant loss of gloss and stripe should be capable of being restored to origmal gloss and appearance with light hand polishing. There shall be no crazing, significant change in color or other deleterious effects. Finish must meet individual tes
、t requirements for adhesion per 3.2.3, moisture resistance per 3.2.4, and if applicable, flexibility per 3.2.8. 3.2.10.2 Twenty-four months Florida exposure. There shall be no crazing, cracking or loss of adhesion. MARCH 1990 PAGE 1 9984087 Copyright General Motors North America Provided by IHS unde
