It is applicable to any adherend/adhesive assembly which is to be bonde
8、d by heat activation methods, but is based primarily on the requirements for shoe sole attaching adhesives. The heat activation life may be defined as “the maximum time after adhesive application at which heat activation produces a satisfactory bond”. A satisfactory bond is defined in this context a

BS 5131, Methods of test for foot
10、wear and footwear materials Subsection 1.1.2 Resistance to peeling Subsection 1.1.3 Preparation of test assemblies for adhesion tests. 3 Principle Adhesive is applied to sole and upper adherends and allowed to dry. A set of test assemblies is prepared for which the time interval between adhesive app

The bonds obtained are assessed using the peel test and the longest time between adhesive application and heat reactivation which still produces an acceptably small amount of non-coalescence of the adh
12、esive films is established. This time is the heat activation life of the adhesive. 4 Test assemblies 4.1 Choice of adherends. The choice of adherends for the test assemblies depends on the type of adhesive, as follows. a) Polyurethane adhesives. The test assembly should normally comprise PVC-coated
13、fabric upper material bonded to resin rubber soling material. b) Chloroprene rubber (polychloroprene) adhesives. The test assembly should normally comprise upper leather bonded to resin rubber soling material. c) Other adhesives. The test assembly should normally comprise adherends for which the adh
14、esive is intended. Whenever possible the types of adherend required in a), b) and c) should meet the following specifications. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-coated upper material. Smooth solid (i.e. non-cellular) PVC-coated woven cotton fabric of overall thickness 1.2 0.2 mm. Upper leather. Double buffed
15、, full chrome, pearl split upper leather, or a full chrome side leather from which the grain has been removed completely and uniformly by wire brushing roughing or by splitting. The thickness of the roughted or split leather should be 1.5 0.2 mm. Resin rubber soling material. Compounded resin rubber
16、, hardness 95 2 IRHD (determined as described in BS 903-A26), thickness 3.5 0.5 mm. NOTEIn certain circumstances (e.g. when adhesion to the adherends listed above is difficult) other materials may be substituted. 4.2 Number of test assemblies. For one-component adhesives, prepare 24 rectangular test
17、 assemblies, each approximately 70 mm 50 mm using the procedures specified in 4.3, 4.4, 4.5 and 4.6. For two-component adhesives, prepare eight such assemblies. NOTEThese are the numbers of test assemblies required for the standard set of tests as given in 4.5. For particular adhesives fewer or more
18、 assemblies might in practice be needed to assess the heat activation life. 4.3 Preparation of adherends. Prepare the material as described in 4.2.1 (leather), 4.2.2 (rubber) and 4.2.3 (PVC) of BS 5131-1.1.3:1976. 4.4 Preparation and application of adhesive. Proceed according to clause 5 of BS 5131-
19、1.1.3:1976. 4.5 Open (drying) time of adhesive. The standard set of times for the intervals between applying the adhesive to the sole and upper and making of the bond are as follows. These times have been chosen to correspond to typical open times used in shoe manufacture. In the case of one compone
