10、een reafrmed, it is reasonable to conclude that its contents, although still of some value, do not wholly reect the present state of the art. Users are cautioned to check to determine that they have the latest edition of any IEEE Standard. Comments for revision of IEEE Standards are welcome from any
11、 interested party, regardless of membership afliation with IEEE. Suggestions for changes in documents should be in the form of a proposed change of text, together with appropriate supporting comments. Interpretations: Occasionally questions may arise regarding the meaning of portions of standards as
12、 they relate to specic applications. When the need for interpretations is brought to the attention of IEEE, the Institute will initiate action to prepare appropriate responses. Since IEEE Standards represent a consensus of all concerned interests, it is important to ensure that any interpretation ha
13、s also received the concurrence of a balance of interests. For this reason IEEE and the members of its technical committees are not able to provide an instant response to interpretation requests except in those cases where the matter has previously received formal consideration. Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) is a government/industry initiative to dene an infrastructure for linking simulations of various types at
20、multiple locations to create realistic, complex, virtual worlds for the simulation of highly interactive activities. This infrastructure brings together systems built for separate purposes, technologies from different eras, products from various vendors, and platforms from various services, and perm
21、its them to interoperate. DIS exercises are intended to support a mixture of virtual entities with computer-controlled behavior (computer generated forces), virtual entities with live operators (human in-the-loop simulators), live entities (operational platforms and test and evaluation systems), and
22、 constructive entities (wargames and other automated simulations). DIS draws heavily on experience derived from the Simulator Networking (SIMNET) program developed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), adopting many of SIMNETs basic concepts and heeding lessons learned. In order for DIS t
23、o take advantage of currently installed and future simulations developed by different organizations, a means had to be found for assuring interoperability between dissimilar simulations. These means were developed in the form of industry consensus standards. The open forum (including government, ind
24、ustry, and academia) chosen for developing these standards was a series of semi-annual Workshops on Standards for the Interoperability of Distributed Simulations that began in 1989. The results of the workshops have been several IEEE standards. These standards provide application protocol and commun
