RESIDENTIAL COUNTERTOPS IN CHINA HIGHLIGHTS Demand for residential kitchen and bathroom countertops in China is forecast to increase 4.6 percent annually to more than 82 million square meters in 2012 driven by continuing growth in new housing completions, rising improveme
6、nt and repair expenditures, expanding average kitchen floor space in new residential structures and a greater penetration of countertops in bathrooms. Solid surface is expected to remain the most popular countertop material through 2012 boosted by the materials performance advantages over competing
7、products. New construction will account for 70 percent of residential countertop demand in China in 2012, resulting from increases in new housing completions and growth in the average size of kitchens and bathrooms in new structures. However, remodeling demand for countertops will see stronger growt
8、h through 2012. Kitchen applications will remain dominant over bathroom applications through the forecast period. However, demand for bathroom countertops is expected to grow faster than that for kitchen countertops, largely due to an increase in penetration of countertops in bathrooms in China from
9、 its current low level. Annual gains of 6.5 percent in the 2002-2007 per
11、iod were fueled by growth in new housing completions, expanding average kitchen floor space in new residential structures and greater penetration of countertops in bathrooms. Fundamentally, growth in countertop demand was driven by the countrys rapid urbanization and industrialization. This report d
12、iscuss the market in China for solid surface, natural stone, tile and other countertops (including engineered stone) used in residential kitchen and bathroom applications. Demand for residential countertops is further segmented into two primary markets - new construction and remodeling - for kitchen
13、 and bathroom spaces. For the purpose of this report, countertops are defined to include the countertop surface, as well as the edging and a backsplash, but not countertop materials used as wall coverings. 15、L COUNTERTOPS IN CHINA Material Segmentation Driven by Chinas rapid urbanization and modernization, demand for residential countertops has posted steady growth since 2002, reaching 65.7 million square meters in 2007. In volume terms, solid surface accounted for the largest portion of countertop mate
16、rials sold in 2007, with natural stone materials as the second largest surfacing option. Solid Surface: Demand for solid surface countertops in Chi
17、na reached 32 million square meters in 2007 following annual gains of 27.5 percent from 2002. Most solid surface material sheets in China are produced from resins, such as acrylic (typically polymethyl methacrylate acrylic - PMMA), polyester (usually unsaturated polyester resins - UPR) or a mixture
18、of acrylic and polyester, with mineral fillers, colorants, stabilizers, ultraviolet (UV) light absorbers and cross-linking agents. Solid surface countertops were first imported from the US to China in the mid-1990s. Very few locally-based firms were involved in manufacturing solid surface countertop
19、s in China in 1997. But strong demand growth spurred the rapid expansion of solid surface countertop production in China, and by 2007 there were nearly 1000 China-based producers. 2009 by The Freedonia Group, Inc. 20、sy maintenance, good hygienic qualities, and resistance to stains, chemicals, and water. Natural Stone: Demand for natural stone countertops reached 18.9 million square meters in 2007, following 0.4 percent annual growth from 2002. Despite below average annual growth during the historical period, in
21、 2007 natural stone countertops accounted for 29 percent of countertop demand in volume terms. Aside from increasing competition from other countertop materials, growth in demand for natural stone countertops has been hindered by concerns in China over the radiation that some investigators contend i
22、s emitted by natural stone. Granite and marble are the two major natural stone materials used to manufacture countertops in China. Tile: Demand for tile countertops was 12.0 million square meters in 2007, representing a 6.1 percent annual decrease from 2002. Nevertheless, in volume terms tile counte
23、rtops still accounted for 18 percent of total countertop demand in 2007. Contraction in demand for tile countertops was due to perceptions that tiles are low-end products, as well as the disadvantages of grouting (which makes the surface more difficult to clean). Slipping demand for tile countertops
24、 has been checked by cost advantages, durability, and ease of installation and repair. Ceramic and porcelain are the most common materials used for tiles.
