9、awn on publication of all three Parts. This revision includes additional products and is being published in three Parts as follows: Part 1: Specification for sheeting, sheets and pillowslips1); Part 2: Specification for towels and napkins; Part 3: Specification for counterpanes1). In this Part, whic
10、h specifies the requirements for towels and napkins, the principal changes from the previous edition are: a) the addition of a second range of towels, identified by the reference TC which describes a range of towels of somewhat different construction from the original T series and which is sold in l
11、oomstate; b) a slight change in T series towel dimensions to permit more efficient use of modern looms and with the object of improving production efficiency to the benefit of both producers and purchaser; c) the addition of a smaller size of babies terry napkin to accord with the growing use of thi
12、s size in NHS hospitals. BS 5815 covers only the basic description of the products and their construction and performance requirements. Purchasing authorities therefore may need to include additional information. This Part of BS 5815 covers the end products quoted but can also be used to specify the
13、 fabric from which they are manufactured. Many properties cannot be specified objectively and cannot therefore be included in this standard. Examples of such properties include colour, handle, appearance and details of additional design features. Public sector purchasing authorities may be able to s
14、upply standard patterns which cover these properties and serve to resolve any ambiguities of description. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Sta
15、ndard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. The dimensions of these articles are also specified. Information to be suppl
18、ied by the purchaser is given in Appendix A Appendix B includes a table giving cross references between item references in this revision (BS 5815-2:1987) and in BS 5815:1979, as well as Ministry of Defence (MOD) descriptions, pattern numbers and NATO stock numbers, where applicable. NOTEThe titles o
19、f the publications referred to in this standard are listed on page 5. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS 5815 the definitions given in BS 5523 and BS 6189 together with the following apply. 2.1 tubular fibre a fibre having a continuous hole along its longitudinal axis 2.2 towel headin
20、g the plain (not terry) portion of the towel including the end hems. The heading may be continuous from the hem to the main body of the towel or may include a bar of terry as a decorative element NOTEThe dimensions of the headings quoted in this Part of BS 5815 exclude any such terry elements. 3 Fab
21、ric 3.1 The fabric used shall be either of the following: a) all cotton, or b) one in which the pile is composed of a minimum of 50 % cotton blended in an intimate mixture with tubular viscose (the proportion of each fibre in the pile being determined by the method described in BS 4407) and in which
22、 the base yarns are all cotton. 3.2 The T fabric shall be woven in 3 pick terry, the warp being laid in 1 ground, 1 terry or 2 ground, 2 terry. The TC fabric shall be woven in 3 pick terry, the warp being laid in 2 ground, 1 terry. NOTEThe fabric should be uniformly woven from evenly spun yarn. 3.3
23、The construction and performance requirements of the fabric shall be as given in Table 1, when determined by the respective methods specified in that table. 4 Towels 4.1 Fabric Towels shall be made from fabric complying with clause 3. 4.2 Heading Headings shall be in plain weave and the maximum dept
24、h of the heading at each end of the towel shall be as given in Table 2. 4.3 Sewing thread The sewing thread shall be either: a) core spun polyester and cotton with polyester core and cotton sheath, ticket no. 75 complying with Table 3 of BS 6157:1981, or b) soft, machine, cotton thread, 40/3, of lin
25、ear density 43 tex 5 % (when measured in accordance with BS 2010) with Z twist and of minimum breaking strength 9.8 N (when measured in accordance with BS 1932-1, using a constant rate of extension machine). The thread shall be of the same colour as the towel and, in the case of coloured towels, of
26、the same colour fastness. 4.4 End hems The end hems shall be a minimum of 2 cm wide of hem type 6-03-01 as described in BS 3870-2. At least 1 cm of raw edge shall be turned in. 4.5 Side edges The side edges shall be either selvedges, which shall be firm and straight, or hems which shall be of type 6
27、-03-01 of BS 3870-2 and of minimum width 0.6 cm. 4.6 Sewing Heading hems shall be sewn using stitch type 301 of BS 3870-1 and with a minimum of 3 stitches per centimetre. Side hems shall be sewn using stitch type 101 of BS 3870-1 and with a minimum of 2.4 stitches per centimetre. 4.7 Colour and fini
28、sh Towels T2 to T5 and napkins NS1 and NS2 shall be delivered in the finished state, towels TC1 to TC5 in loomstate. 4.8 Dimensions The finished dimensions shall be as specified in Table 2 when determined by the methods of test in BS 1930 and BS 1931. 33、olyester core and cotton sheath, ticket no. 75 complying with Table 3 of BS 6157:1981, or b) soft, machine, cotton thread, 40/3, of linear density 43 tex 5 % (when measured in accordance with BS 2010) with Z twist and of minimum breaking strength 9.8 N (when measured in accordance with BS 1932-1, us
34、ing a constant rate of extension machine). 5.3 Edges The edges shall be secured by selvedge, hemming or overlocking. The hems shall be type 6-03-01 of BS 3870-2. 5.4 Sewing For end hems stitch type 301 as described in BS 3870-1 shall be used and there shall be not less than 3 stitches per centimetre
35、. For side hems stitch type 101 of BS 3870-2 shall be used and there shall be not less than 2.4 stitches per centimetre. Overlocking shall be of the safety overlock type using stitch type 512 of BS 3870-1. NOTEThe sewing should be of even tension and the ends finished securely. 5.5 Dimensions The fi

39、ny special finishing requirements; c) details of any marking or additional design elements; d) packaging instructions; e) instructions for sampling, testing and inspection; f) details of any additional requirements. Appendix C Determination of terry ratio Cut out a 10 cm 10 cm specimen from the fabric and condition the s
41、pecimen in the standard temperate atmosphere for testing as defined in BS 1051. Remove warp threads from the specimen so as to provide 10 threads each from the specimen of ground warp and of terry warp. Determine the mean straightened length of each group of 10 threads in accordance with BS 2863. Ex
42、press the terry ratio as the ratio of the mean straightened length of the terry warp threads to the mean straightened length of the ground warp threads.
