、tee. BS 5649 has been produced in Parts as the Parts of EN 40 have been produced by CEN/TC 50 “Lighting columns and spigots”. The standard EN 40 consists of the following Parts: Part 1: Definitions and terms; Part 2: Dimensions and tolerances; Part 3: Materials; Part 4: Surface protection of metal l
、ighting columns; Part 5: Base compartments and cableways; Part 6: Design loads; Part 7: Verification of structural design by calculation1); Part 8: Verification of structural design by testing; Part 9: Special requirements for reinforced and prestressed concrete lighting columns. A further Part deal
、ing with special requirements for plastics columns was planned but is not now to proceed. The UK did not vote approval of the draft of EN 40-3 “Materials” since nowhere in the various Parts have requirements been specified for welding and the UK considered that Part 3 was the most appropriate Part w
、ithin which to cover this topic. This Part of BS 5649 has therefore been produced to include the requirements of EN 40-3, unaltered technically, as clauses 1 to 6 and an additional clause to cover the welding of steel and aluminium lighting columns; the title of this Part has accordingly been altere
、d to “Specification for materials and welding requirements”. The welding of reinforcement used in concrete lighting columns is covered in Part 9. The British Standards affected by BS 5649 are BS 1308, BS 1840 and BS 3989, specifications for concrete, steel and aluminium street lighting columns respe
、ctively. It is anticipated that the affected clauses in BS 1840 and BS 3989 will be withdrawn one year from the publication of this Part of this standard: BS 1308 is not affected by this Part of this standard except by the cross-reference to Part 9 of this standard. BS 5649-3 covers some or all of t
、he requirements also covered in the following clauses of the existing British Standards: BS 1840: clause 3 and clause 4, paragraph 2; BS 3989: clause 3, paragraph 1 and clause 4, paragraph 2. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British
