The strength of such bonds can be as
、sessed by determining the static shear strength of a specified joint after curing under specified conditions. The test does not necessarily represent the performance of the material in service. A range of material strengths is required to meet various design purposes. 1 Scope This Part of BS 5350 de
、scribes a method for the determination of the static shear strength of anaerobic adhesives. It is applicable to anaerobic adhesives capable of polymerizing on a steel surface in the absence of air (oxygen). The primary aim of this test is for ranking and quality control of anaerobic adhesives and re
、liance should not be placed on any test results for design purposes. Design data should preferably be obtained from tests using the construction materials and configurations used in the actual design. This test may be used for quality control of types of adhesives other than anaerobic, if considered
、 suitable, provided that the curing conditions are defined. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this Part of BS 5350 are listed on inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS 5350, the following definitions apply. 2.1 anaerobic adhesive an adhesive that cures s
、pontaneously in the absence of oxygen, curing being inhibited by the presence of oxygen and catalysed by metal ions 2.2 static shear strength the force required to rupture a coaxial joint of given dimensions under specified conditions by a force applied along the major axis 3 Principle The adhesive
、under test is used to lock a specified collar and pin together. The force required to rupture the coaxial joint is then measured. The increasing force is applied either directly by a machine operating at a constant crosshead speed in compression mode or indirectly by a tensile test machine, in which
、 case an adaptor is required. 4 Supplementary information This method of test requires the following supplementary information, which shall be stated when this method is specified. a) Curing conditions, other than those described in 6.4.2, if required for evaluating the adhesive in special circumsta
、nces. b) Details of the conditioning atmosphere and conditioning period. 5 Apparatus and materials 5.1 Shallow non-metallic dish of sufficient capacity to enable the pin and collar to be immersed in the adhesive under test. 5.2 Compression or tensile test machine complying with grade B of BS 5214-1.
、 It shall be capable of providing a constant crosshead speed which can be set to a value that will achieve the required time to failure (see clause 7). It shall also be equipped with a facility for autographic recording. 5.3 Adaptor or jig to hold test pieces and to ensure that a compressive load is
、 applied along the major axis of the test piece. For use with a compression test machine, the jig shall be a rigid cylinder with parallel faces and a clearance hole for the pin (see Figure 1). For use with a tensile test machine, a compression cage is required to reverse the direction in which the f
、orce is applied (see Figure 2). 5.4 Cabinet, capable of being controlled at 23 2 C, and a chamber, if required for providing the conditioning atmosphere. 5.5 Tweezers, tongs or disposable gloves, for handling treated components. 5.6 1,1,1-trichloroethane, complying with BS 4487. 5.7 Polyethylene she
、ets 6 Test pieces 6.1 General Each test piece shall consist of a bonded assembly of either: a) one collar and one pin see Figure 3(a); b) two collars and one pin see Figure 3(b). The collars and pins shall comply with 6.2 and be prepared in accordance with 6.3. 6.2 Adherends 6.2.1 General. The colla
、rs and pins shall be so matched that the diametrical clearance is 0.025 mm to 0.050 mm. The collars shall be made of low carbon steel 220M07 compl
、ying with BS 970-1, and shall have the dimensions shown in Figure 4. 6.2.3 Pins1). The pins shall be made of low carbon steel 220M07 complying with BS 970-1, and shall have the dimensions shown in Figure 4. 6.2.4 Machining. The collars and pins shall have been machined using a cutting oil which does
、 not contain lanolin and which is soluble at room temperature in 1,1,1-trichloroethane (5.6). 6.3 Preparation of components of test pieces Select the number of collars and pins in accordance with 6.5. Wash the collars and pins in the 1,1,1-trichloroethane (5.6) at least three times to degrease them,
、 using a fresh portion of solvent each time and allow them to dry. NOTEOther more thorough methods of degreasing with another solvent may be used, but are not essential to the method. Any solvent used should not leave any residue on the surface that is detectable on visual inspection. Allow the coll
、ars and pins to attain 23 2 C before proceeding further and take precautions to avoid contamination in subsequent handling (see 5.5). If preparation of the adhesive is necessary, carry this out in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Ensure that the adhesive has attained 23 2 C. 6.4 Prepa
、ration of test pieces 6.4.1 Assembly. Fill the shallow non-metallic dish (5.1) with the adhesive under test to a depth of at least 15 mm and ensure that any air bubbles present are as completely dispersed as is practicable before proceeding further. Immerse each set of collar(s) and pin in the adhes
、ive. Then insert the immersed pin into the immersed collar(s) and lift the pin and collar(s) clear of the liquid while sliding the pin into the collar(s) to provide an assembly as shown in Figure 3(a) or Figure 3(b), as appropriate. To avoid the possibility of cross-contamination (see 2.1 and 6.2.4)
、, use a fresh portion of the adhesive for each test piece. 6.4.2 Curing and conditioning. Place test pieces comprising one collar and one pin on a sheet of polyethylene (5.7) with the pin vertical. Support the collar approximately at the mid-point of the pin using suitable means, e.g. pieces of poly
、ethylene see Figure 3(a). Place test pieces comprising two collars and one pin on a polyethylene sheet with the pin horizontal see Figure 3(b). Place the test pieces on another sheet of polyethylene, ensuring that they do not touch. Then transfer them to the cabinet (5.4) and maintain at 23 2 C, unl
、ess otherwise specified see item a) of clause 4. At the expiry of the curing period, remove the test pieces from the cabinet and remove excess uncured material from their surfaces. Then test them in accordance with clause 7, after conditioning, if required see item b) of clause 4. 6.5 Number of test
、 pieces For sets consisting of one collar and one pin, six test pieces shall be used. For sets consisting of two collars on each pin, three test pieces shall be used. The bond between each collar and pin shall be tested once only. Once tested, adherends shall not be re-used. 7 Procedure Locate each
、test piece in the compression or tensile test machine (5.2), using the jig or adaptor respectively. Apply a force to the pin at a constant crosshead speed such that the failure occurs 20 s to 90 s after commencement of loading. Record for each test piece the force, in newtons, corresponding to the f
、ailure point, as follows. a) If the failure is sudden, as is usual, the failure point corresponds to the maximum force reached before failure. b) If, alternatively, the failure is gradual, as happens occasionally, the failure point corresponds to the force at which the rate of loading first decrease
、s (see Figure 5). 8 Expression of results Calculate the mean value, in newtons, of the force at the point of failure, and express it as the mean static shear strength. Also, calculate the standard deviation (see BS 5350-E1). 9 Test report The report shall state the following: a) a designation of the
、 adhesive, giving all information required for complete identification of the sample; b) the items of supplementary information given in clause 4; c) the mean static shear strength and its standard deviation, in newtons; d) that the method of test was conducted in accordance with this Part of BS 535
