BS 3979, Dimensions of ele
、ctric motors (metric series). BS 4235, Metric keys and keyways Part 1: Parallel and taper keys. BS 4506, Shaft ends (metric units). BS . . . .1), Shaft centre heights (metric units). This British Standard has been prepared under the authority of the Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards Committe
、e, following a proposal submitted by the British Gear Manufacturers Association. The standard specifies installation dimensions of reduction gear units of the spur and helical type for use with standard metric series flanged-mounted motors in which the output shaft is co-axial with the motor shaft.
、It does not in general relate to performance, temperature rise, design or materials. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of its

This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be i

、 range of metric series gear units to be used in conjunction with standard metric series flange mounted motors. A list of preferred nominal output speeds is given in Appendix A and Appendix B covers the information to be supplied with an order. 2 Designation of sizes and dimensions 2.1 The sizes of
、the units shall be designated GM 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. (See Table 1.) 2.2 The dimensions of each unit shall be in accordance with Table 1 and Figure 1 and the motors shall comply with the requirements specified in BS 39792). The feet of the unit shall be so designed that dowel holes may be drilled
、 in them. The range of shaft centre heights from the underside of the base has been selected from BS 3). The output shaft sizes, both for diameter and length, have been selected from BS 45064) Table 1, long series. Tolerances on shaft diameters are selected from BS 19165). Keyways are in accordance
、with BS 4235, BS 4235-16) the width of the keyway being to close fit series tolerances. NOTE 1It is recommended that couplings etc., that are to be fitted to these gears should be bored to H.7 limits, BS 1916, “Limits and fits for engineering”. NOTE 2A tapped hole may be provided in the end of the g
、ear shaft to facilitate the mounting of couplings, etc. NOTE 3Keys are not normally supplied with units. NOTE 4Screws for mounting the motor to the gear unit will be supplied with the gear unit. 3 Mounting positions The units shall be capable of being mounted in any of the 5 positions shown in Figur
、e 2, bearing in mind that repositioning of the lubrication facilities may be required. Unless otherwise specified, units will be supplied suitable for floor mounting. 4 Output speeds Preferred nominal output speeds based on the use of motors operating from a 50 Hz a.c. supply are listed in Appendix
、A. It is recommended that these be used whenever possible. 5 Marking A durable information plate shall be affixed to each unit. The plate shall bear the manufacturers name or mark, the number of this British Standard, and the size of the unit, e.g. BS 4517, Size GM 3, together with details of the ge

、l output speeds This appendix lists the preferred nominal output speeds. The actual output speed may vary from the nominal output speed, since it will be dependent on the gear unit manufacturers standard ratios, and on the speed of the motor under load. Therefore, when output speed is critical, the
、actual output speed should be agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer. Appendix B Information to be supplied with order In order to enable the manufacturer to prescribe the best unit to meet the users requirements, the following information should by supplied when ordering: 1) The number o
