、ection of the Plastics Standards Policy Committee. It is a revision of BS 4660:1973 which is now withdrawn. The nominal sizes of the pipes included in this standard are 110 and 160 and are selected from BS 5556. For sizes 200 to 630 reference should be made to BS 5481. Attention is drawn to BS 5955-
、6 and to BS 8301 and which give guidance on storage, handling and installation. Attention is drawn to controls and guidance embodied in building regulations and associated documents, such as Approved Document H for the Building Regulations (1985) which is applicable in England and Wales. In the prep
、aration of this British Standard attention has been given to the work of Technical Committee 138 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and in particular ISO/DIS 4435 and ISO/DIS 8283.It should be noted that when ISO 8283-1 is published, consideration will be given to aligning
、the requirements for the length (L1) of the spigot for size 110 components (see Table 2 and Figure 2). The nominal sizes are in accordance with ISO 161-1. The major changes between this revision and the previous edition are as follows. a) The nominal size is not dimensioned. b) Dimensions and requir
、ements for joint sockets including seal retaining components have been clarified and the minimum wall thickness of sockets has been reduced for nominal size 110 pipes. c) The minimum radius of nominal size 160 long radius bends has been reduced to the same value as that for nominal size 110. d) Dime
、nsional requirements have been introduced for ancillary openings in specialized fittings or covers and additional requirements have been introduced with reference to gullies. e) The impact resistance test has been aligned more closely with current ISO methodology for the analysis of results. f) Requ
、irements for the resistance to surface loading of gully gratings, grating assemblies, access plates and rodding eyes have been introduced and based on BS 5834-2. g) Requirements and a method of test for the resistance to stress cracking of polyethylene fittings have been introduced. h) Requirements
、and a method of test for the impact resistance of polyethylene and polypropylene fittings have been introduced. i) j) The acid and alkali test has been removed. k) The inclusion of exposed fittings and components in materials other than unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. l) m) Requirements for perfor
、ated versions of the pipes have been introduced. These specify pipe with openings suitable for sub-soil water drainage in accordance with “The Specification for Highway Works” issued by the Department of Transport. n) The requirements are verifiable where appropriate so that third party certificatio
、n may be applicable. For guidance on installation, reference is made to applicable codes of practice. Information on quality control testing has been provided in an advisory appendix. o) p) Where possible reference has been made to the methods of test described in BS 2782: Methods of testing plastic

The content of amendment No. 1, issued in July 1996 to the second revision of BS 4660 corrects an error in Table 2 concerning the minimum value for e for nom
、inal size 110. This amendment also clarifies the requirements given in 7.5 for the maximum deflection of a grating, cover or plate. This amendment also deletes the requirements given in 7.3 and the associated test in appendix D for resistance to combined temperature cycling and external loading. Thi
、s change has been agreed following long-term establishment that the performance of products conforming particularly to the requirements for Vicat softening temperature, the SDR-related wall thickness of pipes and fittings and the retained requirements and test for resistance to elevated temperature
、have been fit for purpose. The amendment also aligns the standard closer to BS 5481 and the current proposals for the equivalent European Standard. A test programme is being undertaken to ensure that the UK will have a firm technical approach to the performance requirements in the development of the
、 corresponding systems standards in Europe (CEN) and internationally (ISO). Product certification. Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of third party certification of product conformity with this British Standard based on testing and continuing surveillance, which
、 may be coupled with assessment of a suppliers quality system against the appropriate Part of BS 5750. Enquiries as to the availability of third party certification schemes will be forwarded by BSI to the Association of Certification Bodies. If a third party certification scheme does not already exi

Attention is drawn to the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the need to ensure that appropriate precautions are taken to ensure the safety of personnel when carrying out method
、s of test required by this standard. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summ

、requirements for unplasticized polyvinyl chloride pipe and fittings suitable for the construction of gravity drains and sewers. It is applicable to pipe and fittings with nominal sizes of 110 and 160 together with necessary joints and accessories, including such pipes in a perforated form. Exposed f
、ittings (see 2.5 and 3.2.2) may be made alternatively of specified olefin plastics. If it is proposed to use these pipes and fittings with untreated trade waste or with prolonged discharges at high temperatures, reference should be made to BS 8301 and CP 312-1, and/or to the manufacturer concerning
、the suitability of the product for such use. Methods of test, associated guidance and information on quality control testing are given in appendices. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on page 18. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the def
