、 Engineering Standards Committee and implements ISO 5169 “Machine tools Presentation of lubrication instructions” published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard is technically equivalent to ISO 5169 except where stated below. In 5.2.1 in order to avoid conflict
、with the safety colours that are specified in BS 5378 it has been decided to state that figures should be black on a contrasting background. ISO 5169 requires a yellow background with figures in black. In Appendix A, text has been substituted in place of symbols used in ISO 5169 because the symbols
、used in the latter document are incomplete. In order to avoid confusion it was decided not to include them. Instead attention has been drawn to BS 3641. Furthermore in the appendix, the notation “h” has been inserted to clarify that the time scales referred to are in hours. The lubrication designati
、ons referred to, as examples, in the appendix are taken from BS 5063 in place of those in ISO 5169 which were taken from ISO 3498. Throughout this British Standard reference to BS 3641-1 and BS 3641-3 and BS 5063 replaces reference to ISO/R 369 and ISO 3498 respectively. A British Standard does not
、purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside fro
、nt cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 4, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Fri Dec 01
、 14:41:16 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 5739:1979 BSI 12-19991 1 Scope This British Standard gives details to both manufacturers and users of machine tools of information that should be provided concerning lubrication instructions and it specifies the manner of presentation. 2 Refere
、nces The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 3 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply. lubrication point the point at which lubricant is fed in order to lubricate a bearing surface action point an
、y point in a lubrication system where, in general, an external action is carried out to ensure the correct operation of the system Examples: filling with lubricant (nipples or reservoirs, etc.), actuation of a lever, etc. 4 Technical documentation 4.1 Lubrication instructions. All information concer
、ning the lubrication of the machine tool shall be contained in a single document called “Lubrication instructions” which shall be compiled by the machine tool manufacturer. NOTEThe “Lubrication instructions” may form part of the general instruction manual. 4.2 Technical data to be included in the lu
、brication instructions. Lubrication instructions shall indicate the following. 4.2.1 The designation of machine components to be lubricated. 4.2.2 The exact location of all action points. 4.2.3 The type of action to be performed (inspection, replenishing, cleaning, lubricant change, actuation of a l
、ever, etc.). 4.2.4 The designation of the lubricants to be used according to BS 5063 and the capacity of the reservoirs. 4.2.5 The time interval in machine tool running hours after which each action point requires attention. 4.3 Schematic representation of lubrication instructions. The instructions
、listed in 4.2 shall be illustrated by means of diagrams, photographs or schematic views. Care shall be taken to avoid ambiguity by keeping the illustrations as simple as possible. A copy of the above-mentioned illustrations shall be available on the machine. 4.4 Example of lubrication instructions.
、Appendix A gives an example of lubrication instructions for a particular machine tool and it shall be followed as regards layout. All symbols used in the lubrication instructions shall, where they are provided for, comply with BS 3641-1 and BS 3641-3. 4.5 Minimum requirements. The basic information
、contained in Appendix A is the minimum necessary to comply with 4.2. 5 Data plates for use on the machine 5.1 Main data plate. Wherever practicable, a single plate complying with the requirements of clause 4 shall be permanently attached to the machine. NOTEAt the option of the user, small data plat
、es may also be attached to each action point. 5.2 Small data plates for individual action points (see Figure 1). If these small plates are used on the machine, they shall be rigidly fixed close to the action points, and they shall be so located that they will not be confused with other points. They
、shall indicate lubrication instructions only. 5.2.1 Technical data to be indicated on the plates. Letters and numbers shall be easily readable. The figures should be black on a contrasting background, e.g. white. Yellow should not be used for the background in order to prevent confusion with safety
、symbols. Small data plates shall indicate the following. 5.2.1.1 Action point number. 5.2.1.2 Symbol of the action to be performed, according to BS 3641-1 and BS 3641-3 where provided for. 5.2.1.3 Designation of the lubricant to be used, preferably according to BS 5063. 5.2.1.4 Symbol of the time in
、terval (h), in machine running hours. 5.2.2 Shape and size of small data plates. Small data plates shall, wherever possible, be square. A suitable size is considered to be 40 mm side.
