13、ctions”, the union catalogue or union list is a long-established feature of library cooperation. Union catalogues range from those listing the holdings of the libraries within a single institution to those where a number of different institutions are represented, these being brought together by prox

The agreement to make holdings known implies not only that a collection is available for loan, photocopying or consultation beyond an institut

In the past, libraries notifications of holdings have usually been coordinated and processed by a central agency prior to pub

The development of on-line cataloguing services in the United Kingdom, however, is rendering it possible for libraries to enter their holdings directly into a central data base without the editorial control which has
17、existed hitherto in traditional union listings. Whilst there exist standards or quasi-standards for bibliographic description, subject indexing, classification and machine handling, a standard for the recording of serials holdings has so far been lacking, yet this is a field where consistent present

This standard is not aimed exclusively or primarily at the mechanized recording of serials holdings, whether on-line or not, or whether achieved individually or cooperatively. It is equally ap

It does not specify the format of detailed inventory records maintained for internal administrative purposes. 1.2 Although this British Standard
25、 requires the holdings statement to be linked to an identification of the serial, e.g. bibliographic description, ISSN or CODEN, it is not concerned with the method of identifying the serial or with the link between the serial identifier and the holdings statement. It specifies, however, the content

For alphabetic data, upper case and lower case characters and diacritics may be used. Each data element shall be specifica

The location code shall be notified but its construction is not specified by this standard. 4.3 Holdings data area 4.3.1 General. All data shall be notified positively. Each individual item of chronolo

Gaps within a range of holdings of bibliographic units may be indicated by expressing the holdings in a series of segments (see 4.3.4). If a serial is received but not ret

47、3.2.1 If a piece contains a caption as well as numerical data which identifies its place in a publishing sequence, the caption shall normally be stated at the beginning of enumeration data with an initial capital letter, and may be abbreviated (e.g. Volume, Vol.). If used, abbreviated captions shall
48、 be those given in ISO 832. Captions may be supplied, using square brackets. Details of holdings of “series” or change thereof shall also be included in enumeration data. Example Series 2, Volume 1, 1920- Captions may be repeated when it is necessary to indicate a change in the numbering system, or
49、to avoid ambiguity, e.g. after a change of series. Otherwise, captions shall not be repeated within a statement. If the only enumeration available commences afresh each year, the year takes the place of the first order designator and shall not be repeated. Hence the normal order of enumeration before chronology is reversed. Example 1966(9)-1971(6) 4.3.2.2 If some of the parts of a volume or its equivalent are not present, and a second order designator is available, the second order designator shall be given in addition to the first order designator, e.g. vol
