、ruary 1999 Foreword This Subsection of Part 1 of BS 6100 has been prepared under the direction of the Basic Data and Performance Criteria for Civil Engineering and Building Structures Standards Policy Committee. A general introduction to and explanation of this glossary is given in Part 0 of BS 6100
、 which itemizes the Parts, Sections and Subsections into which this glossary is divided and provides a general alphabetical index of all the terms in the Sections and Subsections already published. Those using individual Sections and Subsections of this glossary are urged to consult Part 0 when doin
、g so. The other Sections of this Part are as follows: 1.0 General vocabulary 1.1 Types of building 1.2 Spaces 1.4 Materials 1.5 Operations; associated plant and equipment 1.6 Persons 1.7 Characteristics and performance 1.8 Environmental and physical planning The other Subsections of this Section are
、 as follows: 1.3.0 External works 1.3.1 Walls and claddings 1.3.2 Roofs and roofing 1.3.3 Floors and ceilings 1.3.4 Stairs and circulation elements 1.3.5 Doors, windows and openings 1.3.6 Jointing products, hardware and accessories 1.3.8 Signs and signing Terms are listed alphabetically in the index
、 and are referred to by numbers which are found against the term in the body of the Subsection. There they are arranged in a classified order, each term having an individual number consisting of seven digits in two parts, the first of three digits, the second of four. The first three digits represen
、t the number of the Part, Section and Subsection. The fourth digit represents the group of terms, the fifth digit represents the subgroup of terms, and the last two digits represent the place within the subgroup. Alternative terms are given in medium type below the preferred terms with their status
、indicated, e.g. deprecated. These terms are not individually numbered, but are included in the index with a reference to the preferred term. Terms of more than one word, e.g. priming coat, are written in a direct style, not as coat, priming. The inverted term is included in the index with a referenc
、e to the direct term. Many of the terms and definitions in this Subsection have been incorporated from, or adapted from, those in the following standards: BS 1248Wallcoverings in roll form Part 1 Terms and symbols BS 1755Glossary of terms used in the plastics industry BS 2015Glossary of paint terms

、sue 2. February 1999BS 6100 : Subsection 1.3.7 : 1991 The definitions in this Subsection are technically equivalent to those in these standards. Sometimes it has been necessary to alter the wording to give terms a wider application or to conform to the style established for this glossary. Terms rela
、ting to finishes in plastering are included in BS 6100 : Subsection 6.6.2 and are not repeated in BS 6100 : Subsection 1.3.7. Wood preservatives and methods of timber treatment are not dealt with in this Subsection. They are included in BS 6100 : Section 4.1. Concrete, plaster and rendering finishes
、 are also excluded. They are included in BS 6100 : Section 6.6. A confusing aspect of the terminology of this field is the tendency to use the term coating in three senses: for the material applied, the action of applying the material, and the resulting film or surface. In this Subsection of BS 6100
、 coating is used only for the action, coat is used for the resulting film or surface and coating material for the material used. While this recommendation differs from some traditional practices, it will, hopefully, remove some existing ambiguities from future texts. Italicized words indicate terms
、that are defined elsewhere in this Subsection. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract.
