These specifications (NOTE 1) prescribe the requirements for welding rod
5、s for oxy acetylene and carbon arc welding, and covered electrodes for shielded metal arc welding, of cast iron. These filler metals are suitable for weld- ing gray cast iron, malleable iron, and some alloy cast iron. Supplementary information, not part of this specification, is included in the Appe
6、ndix. 2 REQUIREMENTS. Rods and electrodes (filler metal) furnished to these specifications shall conform to all of the requirements published in AWS A5.15, unless otherwise stated by the purchaser. Portions of these requirements are duplicated below for convenience. 2.1 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. Chemica
7、l composition of bare rod and the core wire of electrodes (except nickel base electrodes, Classifications ENi-CI, ENiFe-CI, ENiCu-A and ENiCu-B) shall conform to the requirements shown in Table 1 (NOTE 2), as determined on rod and wire as manufactured. 2.1.1 Chemical composition of nickel base elect
8、rodes (Classi- fications ENi-CI. ENiFe-CI, ENiCu-A. and ENiCu-B) shall conform to the requirements shown in Table 1, as determined on weld deposits. 2.2 DIMENSIONS. Welding rod and electrodes shall con- form to the dimensions and tolerances shown in Table 2, for the size specified by the purchaser.
9、2.3 COVERING (APPLICABLE TO COVERED ELECTRODES ONLY). The covering on electrodes of all sizes shall be concentric to the extent that the core plus one covering dimension max shall not exceed the min by more than 5% of the min. The concentricity shall be measured by any suitable means. 2.4 EXPOSED CO
10、RE (APPLICABLE TO COVERED ELECTRODES ONLY). One end (grip end) of each elec- trode shall be bare or free from covering for a distance of about 0.75 inch but not more than 1.25 inch, for making con- tact with the holder. 2.4.1 The other end (arc end) of each electrode shall be suffi- ciently bare to
11、permit easy striking of the arc. The distance from the arc end to the first point where the full cross section of the covering prevails shall not exceed the diameter of the core wire. However, for electrodes larger than l/g-inch size, the core wire shall not be exposed around more than one-half the
12、circumference at a distance of 0.12 inch or more from the arc end. 2.5 ELECTRODE IDENTIFICATION (APPLICABLE TO COVERED ELECTRODES ONLY). All covered electrodes shall be identified in accordance with the following: A. At least 1 legible imprint of the applicable classifica- tion number shall be appli
13、ed to the electrode covering as near as practical to the grip end of the core wire and within 2.5 inch of that grip end. B. The numbers and letters of the imprinted classifica- tion symbol shall be of bold block type and of sufficient size to be readable. C. The ink used for imprinting shall provide
14、 sufficient contrast with the electrode covering in order that the numbers and letters of the classification symbol shall be readable before and after normal welding applica- ti0ll.S. D. The prefix letter-E in the electrode classification sym- bol shall be omitted from the imprint on the electrode c
15、overing. 3 PACKING AND MARKING. Welding rods and elec- trodes shall be suitably packaged to insure against damage during shipment or storage under normal conditions. Net weight of package shall be 5, 10, 25, 30, 50, 60, or 100 pounds, as specified by purchaser. 3.1 All containers shall be legibly ma
16、rked with the following information: A. Specification number and classification symbol. B. Supplier s name and trade designation. C. Size and net weight. NOTE: These specifications are intended to supersede previ- ously published GM specifications, as follows: Specification Number Current Specificat

The only deviation is provision added for GM number call out. For the benefit of those w
18、ho follow the practice of using GM num- bers on drawings, purchase orders, and other documents, the specifications are designated by a single number, GM6142M. The properties desired in a specific rod or electrode are indi- cated by supplementing this number with the appropriate classification symbol
19、; for example: Covered Nickel Base Electrode, GM6142M. Class ENiFE-CI, l/8 Diameter Substitution of AWS AS.15 for the GM number in this call-out is equally meaningful. NOTE 2: Analysis shall be made for the elements for which specific values are shown in this table. If, however, the pres- ence of ot
20、her elements is indicated in the course of routine analysis, further analysis shall be made to determine that the total of these other elements is not present in excess of the lim- its specified for Total Other Elements in this table. 4 INSPECTION AND REJECTION.
