Introduction Protective equipment is worn by cricketers to reduce the severity of injuries from accidental impact by cricket balls. Batsmen are particularly exp
、osed to balls coming off the pitch at unexpected angles. The level of protection required depends on the skill and strength of the player and the opposing team. This British Standard is divided into five parts as follows: Part 1: General requirements; Part 2: Genital protectors; Part 3: Leg protecto
、rs for batsmen, wicket keepers and fielders; thigh, arm and chest protectors; Part 4: Gloves for batsmen; Part 5: Gloves for wicket keepers. 1 Scope This part of this British Standard gives requirements and test methods for genital protectors for cricketers. NOTEGeneral requirements for protective e
、quipment for cricketers are given in BS 6183-1. 2 Normative references The following normative documents contain provisions that, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this British Standard. 19、d chest protectors. 3 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the definitions given in BS 6183-1 apply. 4 Requirements 4.1 Sizing NOTE 1Genital protectors may be incorporated in other garments or protective equipment. Figures 1a) and 1b) show the positions of a hard genital protector
、and its relationship to the pelvis. During impact, the genital protector is supported on the pubic bones. To protect the genitals, a hard genital protector should not be displaced, should not lose a significant volume of internal space, and should not disintegrate on impact. NOTE 2Genital protectors
、 with a more rounded shape and greater internal depth appear to perform better in impact tests. Less rounded protectors with less space are easier to distort by impact. Genital protectors should therefore have as great an internal depth as possible. Genital protectors shall be marked with their size
、 in accordance with BS 6183-1. Sizing shall be explained in the information supplied by the manufacturer (see BS 6183-1). Hard genital protectors shall be sized in accordance with Table 1 see also Figures 2a) to 2c) for an explanation of the dimensions, and 5.1 for details of the measurement procedu
、re. NOTE 3There are insufficient data available to specify soft genital protectors for women. Some information is given in annex A. 4.2 Dimensions of genital protectors Dimensions of hard genital protectors shall conform to Table 1. 4.3 Restraint systems Genital protectors shall remain in place in n
、ormal play and during impact. Restraint shall be achieved using integral straps with buckles, touch and close fasteners, a harness, or by other items of protective equipment or clothing. The manufacturer shall provide instructions on how to restrain the protectors (see BS 6183-1). Restraint systems
、shall be assessed in accordance with 5.3. The reference dimension for assessment shall be the width or length of the protective zone measured in line with the direction of the test force. Equipment shall not be displaced by more than 50 % of the reference dimension by the test force, and shall retur
、n to within 25 % of the reference dimension from the initial position when the force is removed. The test forces shall be 5 N. 32、6183-2:2000 4.4 Impact performance Hard genital protectors shall not shatter or crack, the rubber membrane shall not perforate, and the mean internal depth shall not fall by more than 5 mm below the minimum internal depth A specified in Table 1, when tested in accordance with 5.4. The impact energy
、for testing shall be (152) J. 5 Test methods and procedures 5.1 Linear dimensions and protection volume of hard genital protectors Mark on the protector, on the area that bears on the pubic bones of the player, in normal use, two points b and b9, 50 mm apart see Figure 2a). Place the protector again
、st a rigid cylinder (or half cylinder) with a radius of curvature of (1001) mm. If the marked bearing area does not make contact with the cylinder, trim the protector with scissors until it does trim the greater part from the smaller end of the protector; see Figure 2b). Measure, to the nearest mill
、imetre, the internal depth, internal length (around the curvature of the cylinder), and maximum internal width of the protector while it is in contact with the cylinder (it may be convenient to trace the outline of the protector on the cylinder and to allow for the protectors wall thickness). Measur
、e the protection volume of the protector to the nearest millilitre, by filling the space between the protector and cylinder with soft modelling clay, or a powder (e.g. sand), then weighing the material or measuring its displacement volume in a measuring cylinder. Record the values obtained in the te
、st report, and compare with the sizes marked on the protector. 5.2 Marking for zone of protection tests Mark the area for impact testing on the vertical centreline of the outer surface of the zone of protection. If the protector is part of an abdominal protector or other garment, mark the surface of
、 the garment over the impact test area. 5.3 Restraint tests Attach the protector to a dummy or model body part, or wear on a subject. The dummy or subject shall be within the specified size for the product. Restrain the product, and adjust in accordance with the manufacturers instructions (see BS 61
、83-1). Attach, to the product, a spring balance, force gauge, or other suitable device, in turn, to each point shown in Figure 3, and apply the test force (5 N) tangentially to the surface of the product at the point of attachment (or if this is not practical, parallel to the body surface or plane o
、f the tangent to the body surface beneath the test point). Maintain the forces for at least 30 s. Measure the displacement of the product when the force is applied and when removed, to an accuracy of 5 % of the maximum permitted displacements (see 4.4). NOTEIf the movement is less than 75 % or great
、er than 150 % of the permitted maximum, this result may be recorded instead of a measurement. The position of the product and the adjustment of the restraint systems should be corrected between measurements. Record the results of the tests in the test report. Figure 3 Attachment points and direction
、 of forces for restraint testing of hard genital protectors 5.4 Impact testing of hard genital protectors 5.4.1 Apparatus Hard genital protectors shall be impact tested with a hemispherical steel striker, of diameter (722) mm, mounted on a guided falling mass, with a combined mass of (2.50.1) kg. Th
、e drop height above the top surface of the protector shall be adjusted to provide an impact energy of (202) J. The protector shall rest on an anvil (see Figure 4) comprising a horizontal steel bar at least 200 mm long and (502) mm wide, with a top profile of (802) mm radius. The anvil shall be at le
、ast 80 mm in height, and positioned so that the steel striker is directly above the top centre. The anvil shall be bolted or clamped to a base of mass at least 1 000 kg. The protector shall be strapped or clamped in place during impact. Straps or clamps shall not prevent the protector distorting und
、er impact. The anvil shall be covered with a layer of modelling clay (51) mm thick, and a natural rubber membrane (0.60.05) mm thick placed on top. Means shall be provided to measure the minimum internal height of the protector during impact, to an accuracy of2 mm. NOTEA cylinder of inelastic modell
、ing clay approximately 20 mm in diameter placed inside the protector, under the point of impact, is a satisfactory means to measure the minimum internal height of the protector during impact. 47、 BSI 02-2000 BS 6183-2:2000 5.4.2 Procedure Use two genital protectors for impact testing, striking each one three times. Centres of impact shall be at least 15 mm apart, and not less than 25 mm from the edge of the protector. Impact shall fall on or within 2 mm of the vertical centreline marked in
、accordance with 5.2. Prior to each test, cover the anvil in a fresh layer of modelling clay (51) mm thick, and cover with an undamaged rubber membrane (see 5.4.1). Fix the protector in place, with a cylinder of modelling clay or other measuring device to determine the internal height of the protecto
、r in position. Determine the minimum internal height of the protector during impact. Examine the rubber membrane for cuts or tears, and the protector for cracks, splits, permanent deformation, or other damage. Calculate the mean change in internal height of the protector over the six impact tests. Record the results of the tests and examinations in the test report.
