It is a revision of
、 BS 6172:1982 which is withdrawn. In this revision the Technical Committee considered that many of the operations for the installation of 1st, 2nd and 3rd family gas cooking appliances should be requirements if a safe installation were to result. The opportunity has been taken to present this revisi

、complying with BS 5386-3 and BS 5386-4, burning 1st, 2nd and 3rd family gases, or complying with EN 30. For 1st and 2nd family gases this standard specifies installations in permanent dwellings and commercial and industrial premises, including educational establishments. For 3rd family gases this st
、andard specifies installations in permanent dwellings only. It is recognized that this standard may be referred to for the installation of appliances complying with standards other than BS 5386-3 and BS 5386-4, or EN 30. It has to be borne in mind that other criteria could apply, such as surface tem
、peratures, temperature rise of surroundings, appliance stability, etc. and these will need to be taken into account in the method of installation. NOTE 1Requirements for 3rd family gas installations in caravans and non-permanent dwellings and in boats, yachts and other vessels, are given in BS 5482-
、2 and BS 5482-3, respectively. NOTE 2The titles of publications referred to in this standard are given on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this standard the definitions given in BS 1179:1967 and BS 1179-6 apply together with the following. 2.1 appliance flexible connector a p

COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON CLAUS
、E 3. The type of gas and working pressure for which the appliance is suitable is specified on the data badge. 4 Location 4.1 The appliance shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. 4.2 The appliance shall not be installed in a bathroom or shower-room. 4.3 The appliance, u
、nless it is a single burner hotplate, shall not be installed in a bed sitting room of volume less than 20 m3. 4.4 An appliance for use with 3rd family gases shall not be installed in a room or internal space below ground level e.g. in a basement. COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON 4.4. This clause do
、es not preclude the installation of such appliances into rooms or internal spaces which are basements with respect to one side of the building but which are open to ground level on the opposite side. 5 Siting and clearance requirements 5.1 Siting shall be in accordance with the manufacturers instruc
、tions. COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON 5.1. Aspects to consider with regard to siting are as follows. a) The appliance should be conveniently positioned in relation to other facilities such as sink, working spaces, etc., taking account of the requirements of the customer. b) Siting adjacent to doo
、rs or openable windows should preferably be avoided owing to the effects of draughts. c) Locations that restrict the use of doors, other kitchen furniture or utensils should be avoided. d) The proximity of the cooker to combustible furnishings, such as curtains, should be avoided. 5.2 Clearance arou

COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON 5.2. In the absence
、 of specific guidance in the manufacturers instructions, Figure 1 gives general guidance on clearance zones which should be followed. 5.3 A floor standing appliance shall be sited on a stable base and, if it is to be fixed by means of an appliance flexible connector, an adequate level surface in fro
、nt of the appliance shall be provided to allow it to be moved forward sufficiently for disconnection. 6 Ventilation The ventilation requirements for the appliance shall comply with BS 5440-2. COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON CLAUSE 6. When installing an appliance in a room or space that already con

COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON 7.2.
、1. Because there is no current standard for 1st family gases, due regard should be taken of BS 6891. 7.2.2 Connection shall be by means of an appliance flexible connector for use with a self-sealing plug-in device, complying with BS 669 or, if necessary, by rigid pipework. COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDAT
、IONS ON 7.2. Recommendations when using an appliance flexible connector are as follows. a) 1) The appliance flexible connector should not be subjected to undue forces either in normal use or whilst being connected or disconnected. 2) The appliance flexible connector should not be subjected to excess
、ive heat by direct exposure to flue products or by contact with hot surfaces (see 7.4). 3) The socket into which the plug of the appliance flexible connector fits should be permanently attached to a firmly fixed gas installation pipe and positioned such that the appliance flexible connector hose han
、gs freely downwards (see Figure 2). The socket should be securely fixed to the wall by means of a backplate adaptor or suitable alternative. 4) The appliance flexible connector should be positioned such that it will not suffer mechanical damage, e.g. abrasion from the surrounding kitchen furniture w
、hich may be moved in use such as a drawer or door, or by being trapped by any stability device. 5) The plug-in-connector should be accessible for disconnection after moving the appliance. b) Where rigid pipework is used an isolation tap with means of disconnection should be provided wherever practic
、able. 7.2.3 The location of the termination point shall be in accordance with the manufacturers instructions when provided. 7.3 Connections for 3rd family gases 7.3.1 The gas installation pipes to the termination point shall be in accordance with BS 5482-1. 7.3.2 The means of connection shall be eit
、her by an appliance flexible connector specifically designed for use with 3rd family gases or by rigid pipework. COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON 7.3.2. Appliance flexible connectors for 2nd family gases are not necessarily suitable for 3rd family gases. 7.4 Temperature limitation of flexible conne
、ctors Appliances which give a temperature rise greater than 70?C in areas likely to come in contact with the appliance flexible connector shall be connected by means of rigid pipework or other means compatible with the temperature specified by the appliance manufacturer. COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIO
、NS ON 7.4. If the appliance is not certified by a third party as being in accordance with BS 5386-3 or BS 5386-4 or EN 30, or is not labelled to indicate the surface temperature of the appliance, it should be connected by rigid pipework. Appliances which give a temperature rise greater than 70?C wil

、iance, using a flexible connector, shall be fitted with a stability device firmly secured to the fabric of the building. COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON CLAUSE 8. Two typical stability devices are shown in Figure 3. 9 Electrical connections Electrical connections to the appliance shall comply with
、 the Regulations for Electrical Installations (the Wiring Regulations) available from the Institution of Electrical Engineers. Any electrical connection shall be made in accordance with the manufacturers instructions with regard to connection method, fuse rating, earth connection and voltage range.
、The connection to the mains electricity shall be readily accessible and adjacent (i.e. not more than 1.5 m away) to the appliance, and shall be capable of electrical isolation. The flexible lead and the plug and sockets shall not be directly exposed to flue products and shall not be in contact with
、hot surfaces. COMMENTARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON CLAUSE 9. To encourage the removal of the electrical plug whenever servicing is carried out, an unswitched socket is recommended. Where a switched socket is used, the installer should satisfy himself that the electrical polarity is correct. The plug should comply with BS 1363. Where a socket complying with BS 1363 is not available any alternative electrical fitting used should be provided with a fuse and an earth as specified in the cooking appliance manufacturers instructions. 10 Commissioning The appliance instal
