During intrauterine existence the rapidly developing fetus is protected and favored by the placentas ability to concentrate nutrients and all the nutritional needs are met for the developing fetus. However, after birth the infant becomes totally dependent on the outside environmen
18、t, and if given an imbalanced diet, will show signs of specific nutritional deficiencies. Some of these may appear almost immediately, while others may take weeks or months to develop.
