Addition of requirements for an optional “Wet Location” marking to Section 7. 2. Revision to Paragraph 7.3.1 to delete the prohibit
2、ion of braided coverings on insulated conductors. 3. Update of Table 7.3 to include wire types PAF, PAFF, PGF and PGFF, and an update to the referenced UL Standards. 4. Editorial revision to delete Paragraph 27.2, referencing the Insulation Resistance Test as part of follow-up testing. STP BALLOTS A
3、ND COMMENTS DUE: SEPTEMBER 18, 2006 For your convenience in review, proposed additions to existing requirements are shown underlined and proposed deletions are shown lined-out. 1. Addition of requirements for an optional “Wet Location” marking to Section 7. RATIONALE Proposal submitted by Tom Guida,
4、 UL. An optional “Wet Location” marking has been added to the requirements in Section 7. Industry has indicated a need for this marking on some of these cables. Cables manufactured with NEC conductors suitable for use in wet locations will be permitted to be marked to indicate this fact. Cable with
5、non-NEC conductors that meet the same requirement applied to the wet-rated NEC conductors will also be permitted to be marked Wet Location. See proposed Paragraph 7.3.1 under the Topic 2 proposals for an additional proposed revision to the performance tests referenced in Topic 1. PROPOSAL 7.1.2 The
6、insulated circuit and grounding conductors used in the cable shall consist of either or both of the following conductors (the mix is not specifi ed): a) CONDUCTORS OTHER THAN NEC WIRES Insulated conductors that are unmarked except for size where used as a circuit conductor the size marking is not re
7、quired see 40.1(b) and that comply with the construction requirements in 7.2.1.1 and 7.2.1.2 and the performance requirements (fi ve six tests) referenced in 7.2.1.1 (a) (e) 7.2.1.2 (a) (f). 9、ere used as a circuit conductor the size marking is not required see 40.1(b). The fi ve six tests referenced in 7.2.1.1 (a) (e) 7.2.1.2 (a) (f) do not apply to NEC wires. 7.2.1.2 The insulation shall be solid with or without a solid dielectric skin (a thin, solid, extruded layer that is or is not se
10、parable) applied over the solid insulation. A skin is not required to be of the same material as the insulation. The insulation shall be applied directly to the metal conductor, shall have a circular cross section, and shall fi t tightly to the conductor with no more than nominal adherence (a test i
11、s not specifi ed). The insulation shall be uniform and shall not have any defects (bubbles, open spots, rips, tears, cuts, or foreign material) that are visible with normal or corrected vision without magnifi cation. The insulation shall comply with the physical property requirements in 7.2.2, and t
12、he following performance tests (fi ve tests specifi ed in this Standard, UL 1425) apply to the insulated conductors (non-NEC conductors) described in this paragraph and in 7.2.1.2 7.2.1.3: a) Heat Shock Test, Section 18. b) Deformation Test, Section 19. c) Cold Bend Test of Insulation, Section 20. d
13、) Test for Insulation Resistance at 60.0F (15.6C), Section 27. e) Mechanical Water Absorption Test of Insulation in Direct-Burial Cable, Section 30. (Not required if conductors comply with the requirements in item f). f) Long Term Insulation Resistance in Water Test of conductors in cables marked We
14、t Location, Section 30A. 30.1 The mechanical water absorption (MWA) of the insulation on the insulated circuit and grounding conductors that are not NEC wires in a direct-burial cable shall not be more than 20.0 milligrams per square inch of exposed surface or shall not be more than 3.1 milligrams p
15、er square centimeter of exposed surface, when specimens of the insulated conductors are tested as described in 30.2 30.8. Exception:This requirement does not apply to insulated conductors that comply with the requirements for Long Term Insulation Resistance Test in Water, Section 30A. 30A Long Term
16、Insulation Resistance Test in Water 30A.1 Insulated conductors, other than wet location NEC wires, intended for use in cable marked wet location shall comply with the requirements of the Long Term Insulation Resistance Test in the Standard for Thermoplastic Insulated Wires and Cables, UL 83, or the
17、Standard for Thermoset Insulated Wire and Cable, UL 44. 40.1 The following information shall be repeated throughout the entire length of the fi nished cable as indicated under Intervals, Section 38. The sequence of items is not specifi ed. Other information, where added, shall not confuse or mislead
18、 and shall not confl ict with these requirements. See 42.1 and 42.2 for date marking. a) The applicable cable type letters. No more than one type shall be indicated see 43.1. 20、rements in this Standard as well as complying with 22.1 and 1.12(a) as to fl ame propagation and smoke density in the National Fire Protection Association Standard Method of Test for Flame Travel and Smoke of Wires and Cables for Use in Air-Handling Spaces, ANSI/NFPA 262. Type NPLFR for riser cables
21、 that comply with the requirements in this Standard as well as complying with 23.2 and 1.12(b) as to fl ame-propagation characteristics in the UL 1666 Test for Flame-Propagation Height of Electrical and Optical-Fiber Cables Installed Vertically in Shafts (riser fl ame test). Type NPLFR qualifi es as
22、 Type NPLF. Type NPLF for general-purpose cables that comply with the requirements in this Standard, including one of the tests referenced in 1.12(c) and Alternative Vertical-Tray Flame Tests of General-Purpose Cables, Section 24. b) A marking is not required to designate the presence, quantity, or
23、size(s) of any grounding conductor(s) in the cable. The size (see 5.5 regarding size identifi cation; use of AWG or cmil or circular mils is not required), quantity, and other identifi cation of the insulated circuit conductors is required as follows: 1) For a cable containing individual or paired i
24、nsulated circuit conductors that all are of the same size, size (not quantity) is required unless each individual insulated circuit conductor is marked with the size. This applies regardless of the presence or absence of optical-fi ber members and/or insulated or bare grounding conductors. Examples:
