、d as Submitted by STP Member RATIONALE The requirements in UL 943 changed some years ago to eliminate the requirement for including a hang tag or other means to record the results of the monthly testing of the GFCI. This should have also been omitted for circuit breaker GFCIs at that time but this w
、as inadvertently missed. The majority of GFCIs are receptacle type devices covered by UL 943. Since it is not necessary to provide a form to record the results of testing for the devices in UL 943 it should not be required for devices covered in Copyright Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Specifi cally, paragraph 9.4.5 in UL 489 should be de

PROPOSAL 9.4.3 CB/GFCI instructions shall be provided for correct operation of the supervisory (test) circuit, and the need to test

Location category J. a)For proper use of the supervisory (test) circuit; and b)To record test dates on the label described in 9.4.5. 9.4.4 The instructions shall be on a pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed label that the installer is instructed to attach to the assembled equipment where the

Location Category J. 9.4.5 There shall be packaged with each CB/GFCI a durable hang tag or pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed label with: a)Spaces for at least 180 date entries; and b)Instructions to the user to place this label in a conspicuous location and
、 to test the device at least monthly. Location Category J. 2. Revision of Requirements for the Identifi cation of Grounded Conductors RATIONALE UL 489 currently requires grounded conductors and terminals intended to be connected to the grounded conductor to be identifi ed by a white or natural grey
、coloring. As the term natural grey is undefi ned, UL proposes that 6.1.4.3.4 be revised to delete the word natural and to correct the spelling of grey to gray. This also correlates with Section 200.6 of the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA-70. In addition, to correlate with Section 200.9 of
、 the NEC, UL proposes that 9.4.10 be revised to require terminals intended to be connected to the grounded conductor to be identifi ed only by the color white and that the identifi cation of other terminals be of a readily distinguishable different color. PROPOSAL 6.1.4.3.4 Green coloring, with or w

、OT FOR OUTSIDE DISTRIBUTION 3. Clarifi cation of Temperature Test Requirements RATIONALE It has come to ULs attention that the Temperature Test described in Section 7.1.4 should be revised to refl ect a change in procedure. The basic requirement is for a circuit breaker to be subjected to the temper
、ature test described in 7.1.4.2 without an enclosure, at 100 percent of its rated current. Test conditions described in 7.1.4.2.4 (at 80 percent of its rated current while enclosed) and 7.1.4.3 (at 100 percent of its rated current while enclosed) are optional, but must be performed in addition to th
、e basic test. However, as testing while enclosed is a more severe test, UL proposes to revise the requirements to no longer require a circuit breaker tested in accordance with 7.1.4.3 to also be tested without an enclosure. UL therefore proposes to add an introductory paragraph 7.1.4.1.0 (which will
、 be renumbered upon adoption) to better outline these requirements and to refl ect this change. PROPOSAL 7.1.4 Temperature Test 7.1.4.1 General (NEW) 7.1.4.1.0 A circuit breaker shall be subjected to the temperature test described in 7.1.4.2 without an enclosure, at 100 percent of its rated current.
、 At the conclusion of this test, as an option in accordance with 7.1.4.2.4, a circuit breaker is permitted to be tested at 80 percent of its rated current while installed in an enclosure. A circuit breaker intended to be used at 100 percent of its rated current as described in 7.1.4.3 shall be teste
、d in the smallest enclosure with which it is intended to be used. When the test described in 7.1.4.3 is performed as part of the X Sequence, the circuit breaker is not required to be tested without an enclosure. In addition, the test described in 7.1.4.3 shall be permitted to be conducted on a new s
、ample when not performed as part of the X Sequence. 4. Clarifi cation of the 135 Percent Calibration Test RATIONALE It has come to ULs attention that the 135 Percent Calibration Test, Section 7.1.2.3, should be clarifi ed as it may be misinterpreted to mean that the test is to take place in an ambie
、nt environment when in fact the intent is that the test sample is to be at the ambient temperature indicated in Table 7.1.1.2 at the start of the test. UL therefore proposes to revise paragraph 7.1.2.3.1 accordingly. PROPOSAL JULY 15, 2005SUBJECT 489-3- Copyright Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Provi
