2、 Inc., Subscribers to UL?s Standards Services for: Class 2 and Class 3 Transformers Specialty Transformers SUBJECT: Request for Comments on Preliminary Draft Requirements for the Binational Standard for Low Voltage Transformers, UL 5085. A Technical Harmonization Committee (THC) was formed in 1994 t
3、o harmonize requirements between the Standard for Specialty Transformers (UL 506), the Standard for Class 2 and Class 3 Transformers (UL 1585), and Specialty Transformers, CSA 22.2 No. 66. The result of that effort so far is this preliminary draft. UL wants to facilitate the harmonization process, a
4、ddress industry concerns, and seek input from interested parties before the document is officially proposed. UL is therefore making this draft available to industry, council members, and inspection authorities for preliminary review and comment only. RAT I O N AL E In light of the U.S. - Canada Free
5、 Trade agreement and NAFTA, a segment of industry requested the harmonization of Canadian and U.S. general purpose transformer requirements. The idea was to have one set of specifications to facilitate transformer evaluations. This preliminary draft of UL 5085 is a result of harmonization efforts be
6、tween authorities in Canada, the United States and representatives from Canadian Standards Association International (CSA) and Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Requirements used to conceive this draft standard were derived from CSA C22.2 No. 66, Specialty Transformers; UL 506, the Standard for Specia
7、lty Transformers; and UL 1585, the Standard for Class 2 and Class 3 Transformers. The preliminary draft standard consists of three parts. Part 1 (5085-1) is entitled ?General Requirements? and consists of requirements that are applicable to both general purpose and Class 2 and Class 3 transformers.
8、Part 2 (5085-2) is entitled ?General Purpose Transformers? and consists of specific requirements for these transformers. Part 3 (5085-3) is entitled ?Class 2 and Class 3* Transformers.? This part consists of specific requirements for Class 2 transformers. Requirements for Class 3 transformers, which
9、 are only intended for use in the United States, are included in an annex since these are U.S. national deviations. Parts 2 and 3 are intended for use with Part 1. 21、- July 31, 2001 LOW VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS - PART 1: GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 1 Scope 1.1 These requirements cover the following types of transformers: . Air-cooled transformers and reactors for general use; . Autotransformers; . Ferroresonant transformers; . Class 2 and Class 3 transformers (which are ev
22、aluated in accordance with Part 3); . Cord-connected transformers (which are evaluated in accordance with Part 2); . Transformers incorporating overcurrent or over-temperature protective devices, transient voltage surge protectors, or capacitors; . Permanently- connected transformers rated 600 volts
23、 or less. Advisory Note: The Canadian Electrical Code, Part I , C22. I defines low voltage as any voltage from 31 to 750 V inclusive and high voltage as any voltage above 750 V. The National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, Section 710-2 defines high voltage as more than 600 V, nominal. Therefore in Canada
24、 only, a low voltage transformer may be rated up to 750V. Where information in clauses and tables in this standard reference ranges to 600V, these specifications also apply to Canada which would cover values from 600 to 750 V. 1.2 These transformers are intended to be used in accordance with the Nat
