16、 UL 2556 BACKGROUND CANENA (an acronym for the Spanish-language equivalent of Council for Harmonization of Electrotechnical Standards of the Nations of the Americas) is an industry-driven organization that facilitates and promotes the development of harmonized electrotechnical standards. Members of
17、CANENA form Technical Harmonization Committees (THCs) to address harmonization of specific standards. The usual intent of harmonization is to produce a common set of requirements to enable manufacturers to build a single product to be certified for all involved countries, covering fundamental needs
18、in each country. The Standards Development Organizations involved in the harmonization effort for measurement and test methods applicable to wire and cable products are ANCE (Association of Standardization and Certification), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), and UL (Underwriters Laboratories in
19、c.). The CANENA Technical Harmonization Subcommittee for Wire and Cable Test Methods has examined a number of new and existing ANCE, CSA, and UL measurement and test methods applicable to the flexible cord and power wire products that are covered by the standards currently being tri-nationally harmo

The THSC effort is an on-going process of drafting additional methods for insertion into success
21、ive editions of this tri-national standard. The THSCs proposed First Edition includes all of the mechanical, electrical, and physical properties methods. Flame tests are the focus of the second draft, which the THSC has underway. The reason for the THSC effort is that industry has requested that har
22、monized end-product wire standards be able to reference a single harmonized method standard instead of the different method standards presently available in each of the three countries. The UL measurement and test methods that the THSC effort has drafted in the UL 2556 standard currently are describ
23、ed in the UL 1581 Reference Standard for Wires, Cables, and Flexible Cords. The eventual goal is to replace each of these descriptions in UL 1581 with a statement referencing the harmonized method in UL 2556. UL end-product standards requiring these methods do not need to be revised. They will conti

UL 1581 will retain all of the conductor, insulation, and jacket material requirements that it presently does, plus all of the measurement and test m
