1、Analysis of Strategies in Pronunciation Teaching Under New English Curriculum Syllabus of Ordinary Junior Middle School Abstract : Any effective foreign language course aims at developing the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing Each of these four skills is based on three main elements
2、 of language : pronunciation , vocabulary and grammar Pronunciation is the first important category of the three Investigating the importance and purposes of English phonetics teaching, this paper finds out the difficulties in phonetics learning and provides the readers with some practical solutions

But some English teachers sometimes tend to overlook the importance of pronunciation teaching ,especi
4、ally in the junior middle school. Pronunciation is the key to English learning, and the base of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Therefore, how to teach pronunciation effectively is very necessary. English teachers should pay more attention to the pronunciation teaching. This paper focuses
5、on the importance of pronunciation teaching in junior middle school, studies several traditional pronunciation teaching methods and it also analyses some scientific teaching methods for junior middle school teachers to deliver pronunciation teaching.I. The importance of pronunciation teachingLanguag
6、e includes three basic units: sound, word and grammar. Sound is an indispensable part of language learning. Its essential to English learning. English phonetics is such an important thing that we have to put it in the first place in English teaching.1.1 Arousing students interest to learn English. T
7、hey are unwilling to participate into class activities, just because of their poor pronunciation , it will lead to degraded interest and bad scores. If students grasp correct sound methods, they could effectively consolidate the words and sentences which they have learned before. As a matter of fact
8、, every student has their own desire to express themselves in class. Therefore, English teachers are required to give students more chance to show their abilities, it could successfully improve oral English, and their self-confidence.1.2 We usually come across a common situation: the students have l
9、earned for English several years, but they still depend on teachers reading and mechanical recitation to learn English. It costs students much time and efforts in that way, but if students could master English sound system, their learning must be improved greatly on some degree.1.3 English phonetics
10、 is the science, which studies the characteristics of human sound making, especially those sounds used in speech. It also provides methods for their description, classification and transcription Closely connected to the study of grammar and lexicology, it can help the English learner to better under
11、stand vocabulary and grammar 1.4 English phonetics is an essential part of language and also an important element in communication We study English in order to interact with foreigners One must have good communication to be able to comprehend others when speaking or reading aloud This is proven by t
12、he fact that the better we pronounce English, the more easily we can understand each other and be understood. 1.5 phonetics has long been neglected in English teaching. An English teacher must demonstrate good pronunciation Teaching phonetics is a major premise for English instruction because withou
13、t any knowledge of pronunciation and intonation, the outcome will not always be satisfactory. Taking all these into consideration, we English teachers can not ignore the teaching of English phonetics II. The problems of pronunciation teaching under New English Curriculum Syllabus2.1 The description
14、of New English Curriculum Syllabus of Ordinary Junior Middle School points out that task of English teaching is : arousing and developing students interests of English learning , making students build their self-confidence , get into a good habit of learning English , and making effective learning s
15、trategies , developing the self-depended and cooperated spirit ; making students master English basic skills of listening , speaking , reading , and writing skills , making them have strong ability to use English .There are nine bands demanded in New English Curriculum Syllabus, but for the junior s
16、tudents ,their English learning should reach at band 5.The description of band 5 is: 1. Knowing the meaning of pronunciation in language learning; 2. Knowing English phonetics includes sound, word stress, linking, intonation and so on; 3. Speaking English correctly, naturally and fluently, in daily
17、life. 4. Understanding and expressing different meanings and attitude through word stress and intonation; 5. Dictating words and sentences according to phonetic alphabet. 2.2 As a matter of fact, the present English pronunciation teaching still has a long distance from the demands of the New English
18、 Curriculum Syllabus of Ordinary Junior Middle School. Students still have many difficulties in pronunciation learning. 2.2.1. There are lots of students who cant pronounce symbols correctly or can only recognize parts of them. Students often have difficulties in pronouncing vowels; they cannot corr
19、ectly read /ai/, /ei/, /au/, etc. Some consonants: /t/, /w/, /v/, /d/, etc. They are also the teaching difficulties. 2.2.2 Lots of students havent self-depended spelling ability, so they learn words through mechanical restating, or even use some Chinese characters or symbols instead. 2.2.3. Some stu
20、dents are afraid to reading in class loudly, because they cannot read the passage fluently.Because of their pronunciation, some students learn English very well, but some are not.III.The Students Difficulty in English Phonetics Learning When a Chinese student learns English pronunciation, he might m
21、eet several difficulties. Its necessary for teachers to know about some points with which students may have difficulty. The following are the main difficulties in English phonetics teaching and learning. 3.1. English pronunciation is often neglected by the students themselves especially by non-Engli
22、sh specialty students. They pay much attention to grammar, vocabulary or reading comprehension. Some students can get very high scores in an English proficiency test; however, its still hard for them to communicate with English native speakers in oral English. Its apparent that the importance of cor
23、rect English pronunciation is not fully realized by many students and some teachers 3.2.Since English has such a long history and it is spoken in different parts of the world, there are many forms of pronunciation For instance, the pronunciation of English in the United States of America is differen
24、t from some accents found in Britain , Australia and New Zealand In American Pronunciation, the letter r in such words as car, park, and world is pronounced with the tongue curved The sound / A / is used instead of / B :/ in words which do not contain an r in spelling, e.g. path, class, fast and hal
