The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. ISO/IEC 29109-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC JTC-1, Information Technology, Subcommittee SC 37, Biometrics. ISO/IEC 29109 consists of the following parts, under the general title Information Technology Conformance Testing Methodology for Biometric Data Interchange Formats defined in ISO/IEC 19794. Part 1: Generalized Conformance Testing Methodology Part 2: Finger Minutiae Data Part 3: Finger Pattern Spectral Data Part 4: Finger Image Data Part 5: Face Image Data Part 6: Iris Image Data Part 7: Signature/Sign Time Series Data Part 8: Finger Pattern Skeletal Data Part 9: Vascular Image Data Part 10: Hand Geometry Silhouette Data Part 11: Signature/Sign Processed Dynamic Data Part 13: Speech Data Interchange Format for Speaker Recognition Part 14: DNA Data Part 1 will describe a general conformance testing framework, common (modality-neutral) elements of test method and procedure, assertion language definition, testing and reporting requirements, and other aspects of the conformance testing methodology that are generally applicable and not modality-specific. Other Parts of this International Standard will specify elements of conformance testing methodology, test assertions, and test Licensed Copy: London South Bank University, South Bank University, 16/11/2008 12:02, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI ISO/IEC FCD 29109-1 © ISO/IEC 2008 All rights reserved v procedures as applicable to specific modalities addressed by each part. The test assertions will cover as much as practical of the ISO/IEC 19794 requirements (covering the most critical features), so that the conformity results produced by the test suites will reflect the real degree of conformity of the implementations to ISO/IEC 19794 Data Interchange Format records. Only data interchange format records and systems that produce these records will be covered by this multi-part standard. Conformance testing of CBEFF requirements will be out of scope of this multi-part standard. Other parts of this standard for additional modalities or technologies are expected to be developed in the future. End users of biometric systems desire to use this and other standards to ensure that components of the biometric system can be substituted with other components from different vendors with a minimum of effort, and also to ensure that biometric data produced by one system can be used by another system. In order to achieve this, it is critical that systems claimed to con
