This revision updates and metricates the previous edition to reflect changes in the manufacturing processes and material selection. The major change is that expanded metal lathing is now produced only from zinc coated or stainless steel sheet or strip. BS 1369-2, which is in preparation, will specify requirements for lathing produced from wire mesh, which was not included in BS 1369:1947. For corrosive environments it is recommended that a stainless steel lath should be selected. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 and 2, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Fri Nov 24 08:28:17 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 1369-1:1987 © BSI 03-19991 1 Scope This Part of BS 1369 specifies steel type, designation, dimensions and tolerances for steel lathing for internal plastering and external rendering. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Material 2.1 Zinc coated steel Zinc coated lath shall be manufactured from zinc coated steel complying with BS 2989 with a coating requirement of at least grade G275 for internal plastering and at least grade G450 for external rendering. The steel shall be selected from the forming grades Z1 to Z5. 2.2 Stainless steel Stainless steel lath shall be manufactured from austenitic stainless steel that has a corrosion resistance at least equal to that of BS 1449-2: grade 304S15. NOTEStainless steel lath is suitable for both internal and external applications. 3 Design The designation and types of lath shall be as given in Table 1 and Table 2. NOTEWhen ordering to this Part of BS 1369, the purchaser should state the specified reference number of the lathing required, e.g. BS 1369-1:1987 SRL 2. 4 Dimensions and tolerances 4.1 Sheet size and form Sheet size shall be specified with the length first followed by the width and the nominal size shall be 2 500 mm × 700 mm. The minimum height of ribs shall be 7 mm in ribbed lath and 5 mm in corrugated lath. Ribbed lath shall be formed with a rib on each longitudinal edge and with ribs spaced at maximum intervals of 110 mm. 4.2 Material thickness The minimum material thickness for both zinc coated and stainless steel lath shall be 0.3 mm. 4.3 Aperture size 4.3.1 Expanded metal lath. The aperture, when measured as illustrated in Figure 1, shall be a minimum of 14 mm in the long way of mesh (LWM) direction and a minimum of 5 mm in the short way of mesh (SWM) direction. The aperture, when measured as illustrated in Figure 2, shall be a minimum of 9 mm in the LWM direction and a minimum of 5 mm in the SWM direction. NOTEThe dimensions are for “clear aperture” and not centre to centre of the strands. 4.4 Mass and tolerance on mass The mass per square metre of each lath shall be as given in Table 1, subject to a tolerance of ± 15 %. 4.5 Tolerance on sheet width for expanded and corrugated lath A tolerance on sheet width of ± 5 mm shall apply. 4.6 Tolerance on sheet width and centre of rib to centre of rib dimensions for ribbed lath A tolerance on sheet width of mm shall apply. A tolerance on centre to centre of rib dimensions of shall apply. 5 Marking For each consignment of lath the manufacturer shall attach securely an identification label bearing the following information: a) the manufacturers name or trade mark; b) the number and date of this British Standard. i.e. BS 1369-1:19871); c) either the specified reference number or a number that can be related to the specified reference number; d) the order number. Figure 1 Measurement of aperture for expanded metal lath 1) Marking BS 1369-1:1987 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore solely the responsibility of the person making the claim. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable. + 0 15 +0 2 Figure 2 Measurement of aperture for ribbed lath Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Fri Nov 24 08:28:17 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 1369-1:1987 © BSI 03-1999 Publications referred to BS 1449, Steel plate, sheet and strip.
