It is identical with ISO 8255-1:1986 “Optics and optical instruments Microscopes Cover glasses Part 1: Dimensional tolerances, thickness and optical properties”, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 8255-1 was prepared by Subcommittee 5, Microscopes, of Technical Committee ISO/TC 172, Optics and optical instruments, with the active participation of the UK. This Section supersedes some of the requirements given in BS 3836-1:1974, which are deleted by amendment. The other Parts and Sections of this standard are listed in Part 0. Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standard without deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is drawn especially to the following. The comma has been used as a decimal marker. In British Standards it is current practice to use a full point on the baseline as the decimal marker. Wherever the words “part of ISO 8255” appear, referring to this standard, they should be read as “Section of BS 7011”. Additional information. Referring to clause 4 e), for microscope cover glasses which comply also with Section 3.21) of this British Standard it is sufficient for each package of cover glasses to be marked with the number of Part 3 of this British Standard, i.e. BS 7011-32). A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 and 2, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. The accuracy of the claim is therefore solely the responsibility of the person making the claim. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable. The data given in this part of ISO 8255 are applicable to most products in use and have been adapted to take into account the relevant national standards in force. This part of ISO 8255 contains requirements for dimensional tolerances, thickness and optical properties, whereas quality requirements and test methods related to the material will be dealt with in a future part of ISO 8255. 1 Scope and field of application This part of ISO 8255 specifies requirements for dimensional tolerances, thickness and optical properties for microscope cover glasses used for transmitted light microscopy in the visible spectral range3). NOTEThis part of ISO 8255 does not cover requirements for suitability for fluorescence microscopy. 2 Reference ISO 7944, Optics and optical instruments Reference wavelengths. 3 Requirements 3.1 Dimensional tolerance The tolerance on nominal length, width or diameter of cover glasses shall be ± 0,5 mm. 3.2 Thickness Cover glasses shall conform to the following thickness ranges: NOTE 1Microscope manufacturers, for purposes of optical design, use 0,17 mm as the combined thickness of cover glass and mounting medium, measured from the top surface of the cover glass to the top surface of the specimen being observed. NOTE 2In addition to the above No. 1 and No. 1-H cover glasses, other thicknesses are available, such as(0,17 mm) and No. 2 (0,17 mm) which may be used for some purposes. Highest optical quality, particularly with large aperture objectives, may not be obtained with these thicknesses.4) 3.3 Optical properties The optical properties of cover glasses shall be as follows: NOTEThe principal refractive index, ne, is the refractive index of light at the green mercury e-line (Æe= 546,07 nm; see ISO 7944). This wavelength is close to the maximum sensitivity of the eye and has been used as the principal wavelength of optical computation for some time. The Abbe number, Ée, is calculated using the following formula: where 4 Marking The packaging of microscope cover glasses conforming to this part of ISO 8255 shall be marked with the following information: a) the thickness, No. 1 or No. 1-H; b) the dimensions; c) the average number of cover glasses per package or weight; d) the manufacturers or suppliers name or mark, and the country of origin; e) a statement that the cover glasses comply with the requirements laid down in this part of ISO 8255. 3) The visible spectral range is defined as being the range from 400 to 760 nm. No. 1 (general purpose): 0,17 mm No. 1-H (high performance): 0,17 mm 4) Note 2 is only of a cautionary nature, but does not form part of the standard. 0 0,04 0 0,02 11 2 +0,02 0,01 +0,08 0 Principal refractive index: ne= 1,525 5 ± 0,001 5 Abbe number: ve= 56 ± 2 neis the principal refractive index; nF½is the refractive index of light at the blue cadmium F½-line (ÆF½ = 479,99 nm); nC½is the refractive index of light at the red cadmium C½-line (ÆC½ = 643,85 nm).
