De huvudsakliga faktorer som man vet påverkar resultatet är a) förekomst av rost och valshud; b) förekomst av ytföroreningar, inklusive salter, damm oljor och fetter; c) ytråhet. I överensstämmelse harmed har IS0 8501, IS0 8502 och IS0 8503 ut-arbetats i avsikt att ge metoder för bestämning av dessa faktorer, medan IS0 8504 ger ledning beträffande tillgängliga förbehandlingsmetoder för rengöring av stål och om möjligheten att uppnå föreskrivna renhetsnivåer med var och en av dessa. Dessa internationella standarder innehåller inga rekommendationer om vilka rostskyddssystem som skall användas för stålytan. Inte heller innehåller de några rekommendationer om ytkvalitetskrav i enskilda fall, trots att ytkvaliteten kan ha en avgörande betydelse för valet av skyddsbeläggning och för dennas skyddsförmåga. Sådana rekommendationer återfinns i andra dokument såsom nationella standarder och anvisningar. De ovannämnda fyra internationella standarderna behandlar följande: IS0 8501, Visuell utvärdering av ytrenhet; IS0 8502, Prov för utvärdering av ytrenhet; IS0 8503, Karakterisering av ytråhet hos blästrat stål; IS0 8504, Förbehandlingsmetoder för ytor. Var och en av dessa internationella standarder är i sin tur uppdelad i fristående delar. Denna del av IS0 8501 kompletterar IS0 8501-1. Den beskriver vissa grader av visuell renhet (benärnnda “förbehandlingsgrader') eíter förbehandling av stålytor sedan rester av tidigare färgskikt lokalt avlägsnats. Dessa nivåer av visuell renhet är knutna till de ytrengöringsrnetoder vilka vanligtvis används före målning. De fotografiska exemplen pa förbehandlingsgraderna P Sa 2% och P Ma är tagna ur DIN 55 928, Part 4, Supplement 1 (augusti 1978) respektive Supplement 2 (januari 1986). Grunden för denna del av IS0 8501 är erfarenheten att fullständigt avlägsnande av tidigare färgskikt inte alltid är nödvändigt. Detta gäller i synnerhet när underhåll görs med regelbundna intervall. De olika graderna definieras genom beskrivningar i ord (se avsnitt 4) tillsammans med de representativa fotografiska exemplen, som ges i IS0 8501-1. Dessutom visas fotografiska exempel på förbehandlingsgraderna P Sa 2% och P Ma. Denna del av IS0 8501 är tillämplig på ytor som förbehandlats för målning med sådana metoder som blästring, manuell/maskinell bearbetning eller maskinslipning. Denna del av IS0 8501 anger stålytans renhet med ledning av dess visuella utceende. I manga fall är detta tillräckligt för ändamålet men för beläggningar, som troligen kommer att utsättas för korrosiva förhållanden, såsom exponering i vatten och ständig kondensation, bör man överväga prov för att fastställa mängden Iösliga salter och andra osynliga föroreningar pa den tillsynes rena stålytan, detta med hjälp av de fysikaliska och kemiska metoder, som behandlas i olika delar av IS0 8502. Bestämning av ytråheten bör också övervägas med hänvisning till IS0 8503. 2 Bindande referenser Följande standarder innehåller bestämmelser som, genom hänvisning, aven utgör bestämmelser i IS0 8501.
