This Harmonization Document was approved by CENELEC on 1988-11-04. According to the CENELEC Internal Regulations the CENELEC member National Committees are bound: to announce the existence of this Harmonization Document at national level by or before 1989-06-01; to publish their new harmonized national standard by or before 1989-12-01; to withdraw all conflicting national standards by or before 1989-12-01. Harmonized national standards are listed on the HD information sheet, which is available from the CENELEC National Committees or from the CENELEC Central Secretariat. Foreword to amendment A1 At the request of the British electrotechnical committee, a draft for an amendment to HD 472 S1:1988 was submitted to the CENELEC members for acceptance in January 1995. The text of the draft was accepted by CENELEC as amendment A1 to HD 472 S1:1988 on 1995-07-04. The following dates were fixed: Contents Page Foreword2 1Scope3 2Definitions3 3Standard values of nominal voltage3 Figure 1 Timescale for reduction of voltage in low-voltage public electricity supply in the UK4 latest date by which the existence of the amendment has to be announced at national level (doa) 1995-10-15 latest date by which the amendment has to be implemented at national level by publication of harmonized national standard or by endorsement(dop) 1996-01-15 BS 7697:1993 © BSI 7 January 2003 3 1 Scope This standard applies to a.c. three-phase, three-wire or four-wire, public supply systems, having a nominal voltage between 100 V and 1 000 V inclusive, and to the equipment connected to these systems. This standard is not applicable to standard voltages of components and parts used within electrical devices or items of equipment. 2 Definitions NOTEThe voltages stated below are r.m.s, values. 2.1 nominal voltage voltage by which a system or equipment is designated and to which certain operating characteristics are referred 2.2 supply terminals the point of delivery of electricity from the distribution system of the electricity supply authority to the consumer 3 Standard values of nominal voltage The standard values of nominal voltage are: 230 V between phases for three-wire three-phase systems; 230 V between phase and neutral, and 400 V between phases, for four-wire three-phase systems. Under normal system conditions it is recommended that the voltage at the supply terminals should not differ from the nominal voltage by more than ±10 %. The nominal voltage of existing 220/380 V and 240/415 V systems shall evolve towards the standardized value of 230/400 V. The transition period should be as short as possible and should not exceed the year 2008. During this period, as a first step, the electricity supply authorities of countries having 220/380 V systems should bring the voltage within the range 230/400 V %, and those of countries having 240/415 V systems should bring the voltage within the range 230/400 V %. At the end of this transition period the tolerance of 230/400 V ? 10 %. should have been achieved. After this, the reduction of this range will be considered. NOTEThe deadline for the completion of the first step is envisaged for 1995. +6 10 +10 6 BS 7697:1993 4© BSI 7 January 2003 National annex NA (informative) Annex deleted National annex NB (informative) CENELEC Memorandum No. 14 The recommended marking of the rated voltages of electrical equipment HD 472 S1 on “Nominal voltages for low voltage public electricity supply systems” introduces the harmonized standard values of nominal voltages of: 230 V between phases for three-wire three-phase systems; 230 V between phase and neutral and 400 V between phases for four-wire three-phase systems. The present values of the nominal voltage will evolve gradually to the above mentioned values, the transitional period should not exceed in any case the year 2003. In order to create a uniform situation in EC and EFTA countries, CENELEC recommends that from 1st January 1993 at the latest the manufacturers mark the equipment with the rated voltage 230 V or 400 V or with a rated voltage range including these values, as appropriate. Such marking may already be used before that date. National annex NC (informative) Timescale for reduction of voltage The timescale for the reduction in voltage of the low-voltage public electricity supply in the UK is shown in Figure 1. The actual dates of changes of voltage are 1 January 1995 and 1 January 2003 (see national foreword).
