It is identical with IEC 60264-3-5:1996, including the Corrigendum issued in November 1996. The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted to Technical Committee GEL/55, Winding wires, which has the responsibility to: aid enquirers to understand the text; present to the responsible international/European committee any enquiries on the interpretation, or proposals for change, and keep the UK interests informed; monitor related international and European developments and promulgate them in the UK. A list of organizations represented on this committee can be obtained on request to its secretary. From 1 January 1997, all IEC publications have the number 60000 added to the old number. For instance, IEC 27-1 has been renumbered as IEC 60027-1. For a period of time during the change over from one numbering system to the other, publications may contain identifiers from both systems. The series comprises three groups describing: 1) Methods of test (IEC 851); 2) Specifications (IEC 317); 3) Packaging (IEC 264). 1 Scope This section of IEC 264-3 specifies the requirements for spool containers made from thermoplastic material and used for taper barrelled delivery spools. 2 Normative references The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this section of IEC 264-3. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to agreement based on this section of IEC 264-3 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. IEC 264-3-4:1990, Packaging of winding wires Part 3: Taper barrelled delivery spools Section 4: Basic dimensions of containers for taper barrelled delivery spools. IEC 264-4-2:1992, Packaging of winding wires Part 4: Methods of test Section 2: Containers made from thermoplastic material for taper barrelled delivery spools. 3 Material The spool containers shall be made from thermoplastic material (for example modified polystyrene) that satisfies the requirements given in this standard. 4 Type designation Spool containers according to this standard shall be identified by the spool type specified in IEC 264-3-4, for example as follows: Spool container 264-3-5/IEC 250/400. 5 Requirements For methods of test, see IEC 264-4-2. 5.1 Surface, markings, colour 5.1.1 Surface The inner surface of the spool container and the wire take-off opening shall be smooth and free from protruding material. 5.1.2 Markings Each spool container shall have embossed and/or engraved markings, located on the container outer surface, containing the following information: a) the type designation of the spool container (for example 264-3-5/IEC 250/400); b) name and/or trademark of the container manufacturer; c) year of manufacture; d) the nominal mass of the spool container, in grams. 5.2 Mass The mass of the spool container shall comply with the value given in Table 1. Table 1 Mass 5.3 Dimensions The spool container dimensions and tolerances shall comply with the dimensions and tolerances given in IEC 264-3-4. 5.4 Behaviour after high temperature test The spool container dimensions and tolerances shall comply with dimensions and tolerances given in IEC 264-3-4. 5.5 Behaviour after moisture test The spool container dimensions and tolerances shall comply with the dimensions and tolerances given in IEC 264-3-4. 5.6 Load resistance test 5.6.1 At room temperature The spool container dimensions shall comply with the dimensions and tolerances given in IEC 264-3-4 after the application of the load given in Table 2. The angle ! shall be 30° and the distance “a” shall be as given in Table 3. The maximum deformations of the dimensions and tolerances given in IEC 264-3-4 shall be agreed upon between manufacturer and user. Table 3 Loads and distance “a” 5.7 Impact test 5.7.1 At room temperature The function of the spool container shall not be destroyed after testing the container with the values given in Table 4. Table 4 Impact data 5.7.2 At low temperature Under consideration 5.8 Lifting capability After testing the container with the mass and the lifting height given in Table 5, the parts of the container shall not become loose or detached. The rope or lifting device and securing of these shall not be broken.
