A recommended method of application when washers are fitted into drilled holes is shown in the Appendix. 2 Materials The washers shall be manufactured from the appropriate material specified in Table 1. The grain of the material shall be at an angle of approximately 45° across the tabs of the washers. 3 Heat treatment Washers to BS SP 108, BS SP 110 and BS SP 112 (Chromium-nickel steel) shall be annealed at 1 050 to 1 080 °C for 5 to 10 minutes and cooled in still air. 4 Dimensions The washers shall conform to the dimensions specified in Table 2 and shall be supplied with the tabs bent as shown in Figure 1. 5 Finish 5.1 Washers to BS SP 108, BS SP 110 and BS SP 112 shall be barrelled after heat treatment by an approved method agreed with the purchaser to produce a matt finish. 5.2 The washers shall be free from surface defects, scale, pitting and burrs. Tabs after bending shall be free from corrugation, and any abnormal thickening of the width of the tab due to bending shall be removed. 6 Protective treatment Mild steel washers shall be cadmium plated in accordance with the latest issue of Ministry of Supply aircraft process specification D.T.D. 904. 7 Identification a) The washers shall be identified for ordering purposes by the relevant British Standard number (see Table 1), together with the appropriate code letter shown in Table 2, e.g. a corrosion-resisting steel straight tab washer suitable for a 5/8 in. thread would be BS SP 108 Q. b) All washers shall be identified as “Unified” by a rounded projection on the periphery complying with the dimensions shown in Table 2.
