BRITISH STANDARD BS EN 61300-2-26: 1997 IEC 61300-2-26: 1995 Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components Basic test and measurement procedures Part 2.26: Tests Salt mist The European Standard EN 61300-2-26:1997 has the status of a British Standard ICS 33.180.20 Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Sat Nov 11 12:37:12 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS EN 61300-2-26:1997 This British Standard, having been prepared under the direction of the Electrotechnical Sector Board, was published under the authority of the Standards Board and comes into effect on 15 October 1997 © BSI 09-1999 ISBN 0 580 28569 3 National foreword This British Standard is the English language version of EN 61300-2-26:1997. It is identical with IEC 61300-2-26:1995. The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted by Technical Committee EPL/86, Fibre optics, to Subcommittee EPL/86/2, Interconnecting devices and passive components, which has the responsibility to: aid enquirers to understand the text; present to the responsible international/European committee any enquiries on the interpretation, or proposals for change, and keep the UK interests informed; monitor related international and European developments and promulgate them in the UK. A list of organizations represented on this subcommittee can be obtained on request to its secretary. From 1 January 1997, all IEC publications have the number 60000 added to the old number. For instance, IEC 27-1 has been renumbered as IEC 60027-1. For a period of time during the change over from one numbering system to the other, publications may contain identifiers from both systems. Cross-references Attention is drawn to the fact that CEN and CENELEC Standards normally include an annex which lists normative references to international publications with their corresponding European publications. The British Standards which implement these international or European publications may be found in the BSI Standards Catalogue under the section entitled “International Standards Correspondence Index”, or by using the “Find” facility of the BSI Standards Electronic Catalogue. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, the EN title page, pages 2 to 4, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. The specimen is exposed to a salt mist environment within a test chamber maintained at a temperature of 35 °C. This test is useful for evaluating the quality and uniformity of protective coatings. The following restrictions shall be taken into account. a) The test is unsuitable as a general salt corrosion test. b) The test is unsuitable for the evaluation of individual specimens intended for use in salt laden atmospheres. 1.3 Normative reference The following normative document contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of IEC 1300. At the time of publication, the edition indicated was valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this part of IEC 1300 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent edition of the normative document indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently valid International Standards. IEC 68-2-11:1981, Environmental testing Part 2: Tests Test Ka: Salt mist. 2 Apparatus The apparatus shall be in accordance with IEC 68-2-11, test Ka, and shall consist of the following elements. 2.1 Chamber An exposure chamber with racks for supporting specimens. 2.2 Reservoir A salt reservoir with means for monitoring the presence of an adequate solution level. 2.3 Atomizer A means for atomizing the salt solution, including suitable nozzles and compressed air supply. 2.4 Heater A chamber heating means and control. 2.5 Humidifier A means for humidifying the air at a temperature above the chamber temperature. 3 Procedure 3.1 Conditioning Conduct the procedure in accordance with IEC 68-2-11, test Ka. The preparation of the specimen shall be in accordance with the detail specification. Unless otherwise specified, the specimen shall be subjected to the test in a non-operational mode. 3.2 Post-conditioning Upon completion of the test, the specimen shall be examined and all necessary observations recorded as specified in the detail specification. Careful attention shall be given to exposure of base metals, cracking and delamination of finishes, phenomena such as scratches and pitting which are indicative of the removal of the protective coating. Attention shall be given to changes in the transmission characteristics of the specimen or of the fibres or cables therein contained. 4 Severity The severity consists of the duration of exposure. The severity shall be specified in the detail specification. The following preferred severities are non-mandatory severities which may be specified for this procedure: Duration h 16 24 48 96 168 336 672 Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Sat Nov 11 12:37:12 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 61300-2-26:1997 4 © BSI 09-1999 5 Details to be specified The following details, as applicable, shall be specified in the detail specification: Duration Mist density Specimen optically functioning or non-functioning Pre-conditioning procedure Recovery procedure Initial examinations and measurements and performance requirements Examinations and measurements during test and performance requirements Final examinations and measurements and performance requirements Deviations from test procedure Additional pass/fail criteria Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Sat Nov 11 12:37:12 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 61300-2-26:1997 © BSI 09-1999 Annex ZA (normative) Normative references to international publications with their corresponding European publications This European Standard incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications.
