I GENERAL MOTORS ENGINEERING STANDARDS I Materials and Processes - Paint BLANK WASH - OIL EMULSION, WATER DILUTABLE 9984152 1 SCOPE. This spccilication details the requirements of water dilutable, oil emulsion cleaners used in the washer section of flex roll and straightener quipment or blank washing equipment. These materials are used to wash off contaminants from sheet metal as it is uncoiled and blanked or just prior to metal forming operations. 2 REFERENCED STANDARDS. GM3623M GM9613P GM961 1P GM9615P GM9612P GM9617P 9981833 9981881 3 REQUIREMENTS. Specific material requirements and appropriate test methods are listed under properties. These requirements apply for cold rolled, hot dip, and electrogal- vanized sheet metal substrates. 3.1 Physical Properties. Sheet metal coated with the material over a GM approved mill oil (9981833) or prelube (998 188 1) must not exhibit any rust or staining under normal shipping, handling, or storage conditions which would impair processing the sheet. NOTE: GM Paint Engineering, not the phosphate supplier, will determine the disposition (pass or reject based on the results. 3.2.1.1 The material tested per GM9617P must not exhibit more corrosion or staining than the control panels after 1, 5, and 10 cycles with no more than slight stain or corrosion being acceptable after 10 cycles. 3.3.4 ELPO Primer Compatibility (GM9612P). A rating of 6 or better on a scale of 0 to 10 (with 10 being the beat) is required. , 3.4 Stacked Metal Rquirements. The material must protect the sheet metal from staining or corrosion for 24 h when stored in a stacked condition. 3.2.2 Cleaning. A clean blank with a continuous oil film must emerge from the washing operation. 3.2.3 Continuous Gil Film. A continuous oil film is required on the sheet metal prior to the first stamping operation. The film must not dissipate during successive stamping and trimming operations. 3.5 Easy Dilution and Normal Agitation. This material must not require special mixing equipment and no more than moderate agitation must be required to achieve a uniform mixture. 3.3 Process Rquirements. 3.6 Die or Roll Coater Buildup. The material must not require excessive effort to remove from dies or roll coaters after a weekend 3.3.1 Compatibility with Structural Adhesive (GM3623M). The material must meet the rquirements of GM3623M or limits set by the design engineer. 3.7 Storage Stability. The material must meet all of the rquirements of the specification after being stored under normal conditions for a period of 90 days. This period commences upon receipt of the material. 3.3.2 Welding Requirement (GM9615P). The material must perform comparable to or better than the currently approved reference (control) 9981833. 4 WASTE TREATMENT. The material must be compati- ble with existing waste treatment processes so that total 3.3.3 Compatibility with Phosphate System (GM961lP). The supplier of the material must have an approved GM phosphate system source perform the test. The result must be submitted in writing to the appropriate Paint Engineering Activity. 3.3.3.1 Appearance Immediately after the Snal rinse and before drying, the phosphated surfacs shall exhibit a continu- ous water film. The dry phosphated surface on all substratea, when visually compared, shall be uniform (no visible holes in the mating when viewed under 250X and 500X magnifica- thl). 3.3.3.2 Crystal Size (GM9613P). Crystal size shall be small when viewed under 250X magnification: SEPTEMBER 1988 PAGE 1 9984152 Copyright General Motors North America Provided by IHS under license with GM Licensee=IHS Employees/1111111001, User=Japan, IHS Not for Resale, 06/23/2008 21:16:14 MDTNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS -,-,- - 9006379 0004575 ObT m I GENERAL MOTORS ENGINEERING STANDARDS I Materials and Processes - Paint I BLANK WASH - OIL EMULSION, WATER DILUTABLE 9984152 removal can be achieved. The supplier will be responsible to make known the p rocesing procedures for any component of the material for which the waste treatability is in question. 5 INlTlAL SOURCE APPROVAL No shipment shall be made by any supplier until representative initial production samples have been approved by engineering as meeting the requirements of this specitication. 5.1 Completed copies of the GM Material Safety Data Sheet and Critical Material Register (available from the engineering department or laboratory) must be submitted with any new submissions or where a composition change has occurred. 8 SOURCE SHIPMENT RESPONSIBILITY. It will be the responsibility of the supplier to insure that the material is not exposed to temperatures during shipment which would cause the mateial to fail to meet any of the requirements of this specification. 7 INSPECTION AND REJECTION. All shipments of material or parts under contract or purchase order manufac- tured to this specification shall be equivalent in every respect to the initial samples approved by engineering. There shall be no changes in either fotmulation or manufacturing pm permitted without prior notification and approval by engi- neering. Lack of notification by the supplier constitutes grounds for rejection of any shipment. While samples may be taken from incoming shipments and checked for conformance to this specificatioxb the supplier shall accept the responsibii- ty for incoming shipments meeting this specification without dependence upon purchas&s mspection. 8 APPROVED SOURCES. Engineering qualification of an approved source is required for this specilication. Only sources iisted in the GM Material File under this specification number have been quahfied by engineering as meeting the requirements of this specification. 9 GENERAL INFORMATION. This is a newly issued specification originated by the Automotive Paint Committee in September 1988. 9984152 PAGE 2 SEPTEMBER 1988 Copyright General Motors North America Provided by IHS under license with GM Licensee=IHS Employees/1111111001, User=Japan, IHS Not for Resale, 06/23/2008 21:16:14 MDTNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS -,-,-
