It supersedes clause 9 of BS 5173-1:1976 and, together with Section 101.1, supersedes the whole of BS 5173-1:1976 which is withdrawn. The remainder of the 1976 and 1977 editions are to be revised and as each of the tests is revised it is intended to issue it as a separate Part or Section of BS 5173, as described in BS 5173-100. Section 101.1 is identical with ISO 4671-1984 published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 4671 does not include a clause dealing with the measurement of length and this Section of BS 5173 enlarges clause 9 of BS 5173-1:1976 to include illustrated examples of hose assembly length measurements. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back page. 2 Measurement of length For lengths up to and including 20 m, measure with a graduated steel tape complying with BS 4484-1. For lengths over 20 m, measure with a graduated steel tape complying with BS 4484-1 or a wheel type measuring gauge. Make all measurements with the hose in a straight and unstretched condition. 3 Identification of length 3.1 For hoses without end fittings determine the length of the hose between the extreme ends of the cut length. 3.2 For hoses with end fittings attached ensure that the measuring points for the length of the assembly are identified. NOTEFigure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5 and Figure 6 show typical end fittings and how to identify the different measuring points. 3.3 For hose assemblies with end fittings not illustrated in Figure 1 to Figure 6 ensure that the measuring point of the fitting is identified from the fitting manufacturers published data. 4 Test report The test report shall include the following information: a) a full description of the hose or hose assembly; b) the date of test; c) the number and Section of this British Standard i.e. BS 5173-101.2; d) the length of the hose or hose assembly; e) the points of measurement; f) the method of measurement.
