Housings for three types of wiper ring are specified in this British Standard. Type A and B rings are intended for use in applications where there are no significant space limitations, while type C rings have reduced cross-sectional dimensions. The wiper ring manufacturer should be consulted on the suitability of a particular type of ring for the application; this is particularly important in the case of type C wiper rings. The ranges of piston rod diameters specified in this British Standard have been selected from BS 5755. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 6, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. Licensed Copy: sheffieldun sheffieldun, na, Tue Dec 05 05:51:31 GMT+00:00 2006, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI BS 6852:1987 © BSI 12-19991 1 Scope This British Standard specifies dimensions and tolerances of housings for wiper rings used in reciprocating rod applications for hydraulic fluid power cylinders. The range of rod sizes is from 6 mm to 360 mm diameter inclusive. It includes the following three types of housing design. Type A: recessed housing with an undercut, or separate cover, to retain a non-metallic wiper ring. Type B: open recessed housing for a wiper ring having integral rigid reinforcement, and which is a press-fit in the housing. Type C: recessed housing with an undercut to retain a non-metallic wiper ring having a reduced cross section. This British Standard does not specify the style, configurations, materials or performance rating for the wiper ring. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definition applies. wiper ring a device used to prevent ingress of contaminants and thereby protect the seals and bearings within a fluid power cylinder 3 Letter symbols Letter symbols used in this British Standard are as follows: 4 Dimensions and tolerances 4.1 General All sharp edges and burrs shall be removed from corners of supporting surfaces and rounded to within the tolerances specified in Table 1, Table 2 and Table 3. 4.2 Housing 4.2.1 Type A. The dimensions and tolerances for type A housings shall be as given in Table 1 and as illustrated in the example in Figure 1. 4.2.2 Type B. The dimensions and tolerances for type B housings shall be as given in Table 2 and as illustrated in the example in Figure 2. 4.2.3 Type C. The dimensions and tolerances for type C housings shall be as given in Table 3 and as illustrated in the example in Figure 3. 4.3 Lead-in chamfer The lead-in chamfer on the piston rod shall be as illustrated in Figure 1, Figure 2 and Figure 3, and its axial length C shall be not less than the appropriate dimension given in Table 4. 5 Surface texture 5.1 Piston rod The surface texture of the piston rod shall be that specified for the related rod seal, e.g. BS 5751. 5.2 Housing The surface texture of the other housing surfaces shall not exceed 32 4m Ra when measured in accordance with BS 1134-1. drod diameter D1outside diameter of the wiper housing D2retainer diameter Caxial length of the lead-in chamfer L1axial length of the wiper housing L2maximum length of the wiper Sradial depth (cross section) of the housing, (D1 d)/2 rradius.
