The portions with dotted underlines are items not included in the original Inter- national Standard. 1 Scope This Standard specifies the direct and indirect verification methods for testing machine that are used for the Brinell hardness test specified in JIS Z 2243. 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this Standard, constitute provisions of this Standard. If the indication of the year of publication is given to these referred standards, only the edition of the indicated year constitutes the provision of this Standard but the revision and amend- ment made thereafter do not apply. The normative references without the indica- tion of the year of coming into effect or the year of publication apply only to the most recent edition (including amendments). Calibration of force-proving instruments used for the verification of uniaxial testing machines JIS B 7728 is identical with the said standard. If the verification is made outside this temperature range, this shall be reported in the verification report. The instruments used for verification and calibration shall be traceable to SI units. Direct verification involves: the calibration of the test force; the verification of the indenter; the calibration of the measuring device; the verification of the testing cycle. Calibration of test force Each test force shall be measured. Whenever applicable, this shall be done at not less than three positions of the plunger spaced throughout its range of move- ment during testing. The apparatus for calibrating the test force shall be either of the following: 1) a force-proving instrument conforming to at least class 1 specified in JIS B 7728; 2) a combination of calibrated masses and the lever, accurate to kO.2 %. Measurement is carried out three times at each position of a plunger. The moving direction of the plunger in this measurement shall be the same as during a hard- ness test. The tolerance of each measured value shall be 2 1.0 % of the test force specified in JIS Z 2243. Calibration of the test force shall be as follows: Verification of indenter Verification of an indenter shall be as follows (the indenter consists of a ball and an indenter holder): a) For the purpose of verifying the size and the hardness of the balls, a sample selected at random from a batch shall be tested. The ball verified for hardness shall be discarded. The balls shall be polished and free from surface defects. The user shall either measure the balls to ensure that they meet the following requirements d) and e), or shall obtain balls from a supplier certifying that the following conditions are met. b) c) PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT Copyright Japanese Standards Association Provided by IHS under license with JSALicensee=IHS Employees/1111111001, User=Wing, Bernie Not for Resale, 03/11/2007 00:30:02 MSTNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS -,-,- 3 B 7724 : 1999 (ISOLDIS 6506-2 : 1997) Diameter of ball mm d) The diameter of a ball shall be measured at least at three positions. Toler- ances of the diameters shall be as given in Table 1. Tolerance of diameter Pm Table 1 Tolerances for diameters of a ball 10 +.5 e) The hardmetal balls shall have a hardness of not less than 1500 HV10 when determined in accordance with IS0 3878 and have a density of 14.8 g/cm3 when the result of the indirect verification is not satisfactory; when indirect Verification has not been made for a period greater than 12 months, 2) 3) PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT Copyright Japanese Standards Association Provided by IHS under license with JSALicensee=IHS Employees/1111111001, User=Wing, Bernie Not for Resale, 03/11/2007 00:30:02 MSTNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS -,-,- 5 B 7724 : 1999 (ISO/DIS 6506-2 : 1997) b) The period between two indirect verifications depends on the maintenance standard and the number of times the machine is used. In any case, the period shall not exceed 12 months. Further, each direct verification shall be followed by an indirect verification. 7 Verification repodcalibration certificate The verification report or calibration certificate shall include the following information: a) b) a reference to this Standard; the method of verification (direct and/or indirect); c) identification data for the testing machine (manufacturer, manufacturing num- ber and the like); the means of verification (reference blocks, elastic proving devices, etc.); the diameter of the ball indenter and test force; the verification temperature (except when it is 23 “C f 5 O C ) ; d) e) f) g) the result obtained; h) the date of verification and reference to the verification institution, Related standard: JIS H 5501 Cemented carbide alloy of tip PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT Copyright Japanese Standards Association Provided by IHS under license with JSALicensee=IHS Employees/1111111001, User=Wing, Bernie Not for Resale, 03/11/2007 00:30:02 MSTNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS -,-,- 6. Veri- fication of the measuring device can be carried out by measuring the reference indentation on each reference block to be used for indirect verification of the testing device as given in 5 a) of the text see 8 c) of JIS B 77361. The error of the measuring device (expressed as a percentage of the diameter of each reference indentation) shall be Il %.
